Societies

To see a list of all our societies, see what they are up to, when they meet and sign up online, see their information here…

There are over 120 different societies, the list is endless, as is the choice, but whatever society you join you are guaranteed an introduction to a whole new circle of people, interests and places to socialise in Cardiff!

They range from the departmental societies (such as the Law Society), to recreational (the live music society, for instance), religious, political (for all you future leaders, all main parties are represented), international (a great way to get in touch with the Malaysian community in Wales for example) and volunteering societies (our RAG society raises thousands of pounds each year for charity.)

Contacts

Jemma Mallorie is the Student Democracy and Societies Coordinator here at the union. She deals with the day to day running of societies and works hard to answer and enquiries or queries that you may have.

If you have any questions about joining a society or forminga society that you are already in she is only to happy to help. To get hold of her email her on MallorieJ1@cf.ac.uk or ring her on 02920 781 433.

Societies throughout the year

The Union holds a societies fayre in Freshers’ Fortnight, where you will have the opportunity to join whatever society takes your fancy. The executives (students who are elected to run their society) will be trying their best to sell themselves to you and you will have the chance to ask them questions about their activities. And there are also lots of opportunities for freebies!

Societies are able to hire all the Union’s venues at cost price, get rooms in the Union and the University for free, can use the Union’s minibuses and many more privileges.

Last year, the support of the academic societies led to strengthening of links between the Union and University, the best example being the presence of University staff at the society balls. Moreover, the political and religious groups within the Union have maintained and improved the good relations the Union holds with the Cardiff community, and has shown that people of different beliefs can live side by side, enjoying all that the Union has to offer.

Societies Events

Something to look out for is Go Global. This is a Society-run festival of equality, diversity and culture. It took place in the last two weeks of February, the festival was a fantastically vibrant and creative fortnight of different events that culminated in a concert and food fest on the last evening, known as Global Village, to see photos and find out more have a look here

If you haven’t already, get involved in Societies and DON’T MISS OUT! It’s the best thing you’ll ever do!
