The Guild of Societies Tier Structure

The Tier Structure gives committee members a framework to run their Society successfully. It outlines everything you need to do to be a functional Society (Bronze Tier) and things you can do to further develop your Society and you commmittee, as well as offering more for your members. Societies achieving each Tier will be able to celebrate their successes with out branded banners, which will be placed on your webpage and can be used on your social media platforms.

Tiers will be reviewed at your Society Development Meeting with a member of the Activities Team.

Bronze

The Bronze Tier is compulsory for all Societies to complete. To achieve ‘Bronze’ tier, you must have completed all of the following criteria. Any Society not achieving these will be placed on Probation.

  1. Membership of at least 20 members registered through the SU.
  2. Committee includes a President, Secretary and Treasurer and all committee members are students of Cardiff University and paid members of the Guild of Societies and their Society.
  3. Register all activity with the Union and all participants as Society members or through another SU department or activity.
  4. At least two committee members attend all compulsory training sessions.
  5. At least three members attend the Students’ Union AGM.
  6. Provide feedback on Society experience at Society Forum.
  7. Keep all society funds in the Students’ Union bank account and keep a constant positive balance, unless pre-agreed.
  8. Seek approval from the SU for all contracts signed by the Society.
  9. Adhere to a valid constitution, your agreement between the SU and the Society.
  10. Submit an up-to-date record of all equipment owned by the Society, using our Template Inventory.
  11. Run a democratic committee election, hold an AGM and take minutes of AGM.
  12. Submit all requested documents by the deadlines set by the Societies Team.
  13. Organise at least 2 socials or events per semester, 1 of these being non-alcoholic.
  14. Turn up to allotted stand and adhere to the guidelines set at Societies Fair or Heath Fair.
  15. Adhere to the Guild of Societies Social Policy.
  16. Accurate and up-to-date online content on cardiffstudents.com.

Silver

To achieve ‘Silver’ status, you must have completed all of the Bronze criteria and at least 7 of the Silver criteria. Additional criteria are only available for your society’s category.

  1. Attend additional training sessions.
  2. Organise a fundraising initiative.
  3. Increase membership by at least 10% compared to previous year.
  4. Hold a ‘Reserve Fund’ in Union bank account.
  5. Host one Give it a Go event per semester.
  6. Organise at least 2 non-alcoholic social events or activities per semester.
  7. Organise at least one event or activity per fortnight for members.
  8. Submit a Society Development Plan, producing measurable targets for the development of your Society.
  9. Submit a Widening Access Policy, breaking down barriers to participation in your events or activities.
  10. Produce and implement a Handover for the new committee, giving them information and advice for running the Society next year.
  11. Keep records of volunteering hours for committee members and submit them to the SU.
  12. Promote and run events on both the Cathays and Heath campuses.
  13. Submit a Society of the Month application to celebrate your Society’s achievements.
  14. Meet a minimum of 60% satisfaction in the annual satisfaction survey.

Activity & Appreciation

  • Host a showcase event, exhibition or masterclass to demonstrate your Society’s activities.
  • Collaboration with another society for an activity or event.

Course Based

  • Active engagement with Academic Reps or the Student-Staff Panel.
  • Host an employability, wider reading or additional learning event for members.

Cultural & International

  • Host a collaboration event with another Cultural and International society.
  • Participate in Go Global.

Discussion, Campaign & Awareness

  • Collaborate with another Discussion, Campaigns and Awareness group.
  • Plan and run an awareness or fundraising campaign, consisting of at least two different elements.

Performance & Artistic

  • Host a collaboration/performance event with another society.
  • Participate in Cardiff Fringe or the Winter Showcase.

Political & Ideological

  • Engage with interfaith week or a local/national group relating to the society’s activity.
  • Host an awareness or fundraising campaign or event with the SU.

Gold

To achieve ‘Gold’ status, you must have completed all ‘Bronze’ criteria, at least 7 ‘Silver’ criteria and at least 10 of the following ‘Gold’ criteria. Additional criteria are only available for your society’s category.

  1. Organise three fundraising initiatives or one large fundraising event/campaign.
  2. Increase membership by over 25% compared to previous year.
  3. Organise three or more non-alcoholic social events per semester.
  4. Organise at least one event per week for members.
  5. Host two or more Give it a Go events per semester.
  6. Submit a Social Media and Marketing Development Plan, producing measurable targets for the development of your Social Media and Marketing output.
  7. Proven development of Society based on Development Plan.
  8. Proven development of Society based on Widening Access Policy.
  9. Host an initiative to get your members more involved in the SU Elections.
  10. Collaborate with Cardiff Volunteering for volunteering activities with your members.
  11. Participate in a wider SU campaign or event, such as Mind Your Head Week or Cardiff Jailbreak.
  12. Provide opportunities for members to develop new skills, such as workshops or masterclasses.
  13. Collaborate with multiple Societies from different categories for activities or events.
  14. Run an event or activity outside of Cardiff.
  15. Incorporate a Post-Grad representative on your committee.
  16. Meet a minimum of 80% satisfaction in the annual satisfaction survey.

Activity & Appreciation

Host an event in collaboration with similar student groups from other Universities.

Course Based

Provide academic support for membership through parent schemes, study sessions or other initiatives.

Cultural & International

Engagement with the BME or International Students’ Association or Officer.

Discussion, Campaign & Awareness

Participation in a national or inter-University event.

Performance & Artistic

Host an event in collaboration with a Society from a different category.

Political & Ideological

Host or take part in a debate relating to the society’s aims/activity.
