Statement: Industrial Action - February and March 2023
On the 26th of January, the University and College Union (UCU) announced that the latest negotiations with the University and College Employers Association (UCEA) had fallen short in the dispute over pay and working conditions.
With this announcement, the 18 days of strike action across February and March were confirmed. As per the policy, the university will withhold a full day’s pay for each day staff participate in strike action, which will be used by the university to support students and to address the disruption caused by industrial action.
Last December, during our Annual General Meeting (AGM), you told us to stand in solidarity with the National UCU Industrial Action taking place during the academic year 2022/23. You recognized that the national strike action is not only a fight for better pay and pensions, but it is also to stand against pay inequality, precarious work, and excessive workloads which affect our lecturers, our education and many Postgraduate students who teach across the country.
Whilst the SU has a stance of supporting the strikes and lobbying for refunds as mandated by our students, we hear the voices and concerns of students about their education, and the consequences that the 18 days of strike action will have. Due to this, and with the support of the UCU, the Sabbatical Officer team has drafted a letter to the Vice-Chancellor requesting that (1) financial compensation be given to students who have their courses disrupted and (2) the university is transparent in how the funds saved from withheld pay are being used.
Furthermore, our Student Advice service is available provide free and impartial advice covering disrupted learning; fee queries; and extenuating circumstances to all students.

Ar 26 Ionawr, cyhoeddodd Undeb y Prifysgolion a Cholegau (UCU) fod y trafodaethau diweddaraf gyda Chymdeithas Cyflogwyr Prifysgolion a Cholegau (UCEA) wedi methu digoni yn yr anghydfod dros dâl ac amodau gwaith.
Gyda'r cyhoeddiad hwn, cadarnhawyd yr 18 diwrnod o streic rhwng Chwefror a Mawrth. Yn unol â'r polisi, bydd y brifysgol yn atal diwrnod llawn o gyflog am bob diwrnod y mae staff yn cymryd rhan mewn streic, a ddefnyddir gan y brifysgol i gefnogi myfyrwyr ac i fynd i'r afael â'r amhariad a achosir gan weithredu diwydiannol.
Mis Rhagfyr diweddaf, yn ystod ein Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol (CCB), dywedoch wrthym am sefyll mewn undod â Gweithredu Diwydiannol Cenedlaethol UCU a gynhelir yn ystod blwyddyn academaidd 2022/23. Wnaethoch chi gydnabod bod y streic genedlaethol nid yn unig yn frwydr dros well cyflog a phensiynau, ond ei fod hefyd i sefyll yn erbyn anghydraddoldeb cyflog, gwaith ansicr, a llwythi gwaith gormodol sy’n effeithio ar ein darlithwyr, ein haddysg a llawer o fyfyrwyr ôl-raddedig sy’n addysgu ledled y wlad.
Tra bod gan yr UM safiad o gefnogi'r streiciau a lobïo am ad-daliadau yn unol â mandad ein myfyrwyr , clywn leisiau a phryderon myfyrwyr am eu haddysg, a’r canlyniadau y bydd yr 18 diwrnod o streic yn eu cael. Oherwydd hyn, a chyda chefnogaeth yr UCU, mae tîm y Swyddogion Sabothol wedi drafftio llythyr at yr Is-Ganghellor yn gofyn (1) bod iawndal ariannol yn cael ei roi i fyfyrwyr yr amharwyd ar eu cyrsiau a (2) bod y brifysgol yn dryloyw o ran sut mae'r arian a arbedwyd o dâl a ataliwyd yn cael ei ddefnyddio.
Ymhellach, mae ein gwasanaeth Cyngor i Fyfyrwyr yn darparu cyngor diduedd ac am ddim ynghylch yr amhariad ar ddysgu; ymholiadau ffioedd; ac amgylchiadau esgusodol i bob myfyriwr.
Yn olaf, p'un a ydych yn cefnogi'r streiciau ai peidio, hoffem annog ein myfyrwyr i ymweld ag ein Tudalen Gweithredu Diwydiannol i ddod i wybod mwy am anghydfod yr UCU a'r gweithredoedd/digwyddiadau a gynhaliwyd gan yr UM sy'n gysylltiedig ag ef.
