At the Students’ Union Annual General Meeting, Cardiff students voted in favour of supporting Industrial Action undertaken by Cardiff’s branch of the University and College Union (UCU) in national disputes surrounding pensions, pay, and working conditions.

In April 2022, Cardiff UCU secured a mandate for Industrial Action, lasting until October 2022, as a result of an overwhelming ‘YES’ vote for industrial action from its membership. The University and College Union has since announced that a Marking and Assessment Boycott will commence on 23rd May, along with other forms of action that are yet to be confirmed.

The Students’ Union will continue to stand in support of University staff and PGR students throughout this action. We fully understand why this action is required, and we know that this is not a decision that staff have taken lightly. The long-term issues faced by staff across the Higher Education sector are detrimental to the experience and education of our students, both in Cardiff and across the rest of the Post-16 sector.

We as a Sabbatical Officer Team are, however, aware of the huge impact this is likely to have on the student body. The potential disruption to students as a result of a Marking and Assessment Boycott is huge, and may result in a number of students facing delays in getting results. It is therefore in students’ best interests that this dispute is ended as soon as possible.

The continued failure of the University to act upon the disputes raised by staff is impacting the student experience at all levels. We will continue to lobby the University to meet the demands of UCU at the negotiation table, and are actively campaigning against 100% pay cuts that have been threatened elsewhere in the sector.

We have recently updated our Strikes FAQ page and will continue to do so as and when more information becomes available. Any further questions can be sent to Orla Tarn, VP Postgraduate, at VPPostgraduate@cardiff.ac.uk.

Yng Nghyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol Undeb y Myfyrwyr, pleidleisiodd myfyrwyr Caerdydd o blaid cefnogi Gweithredu Diwydiannol a gyflawnwyd gan gangen Caerdydd o'r Undeb Prifysgolion a Cholegau (UCU) mewn anghydfodau cenedlaethol ynghylch pensiynau, cyflog, ac amodau gwaith.

Ym mis Ebrill 2022, sicrhaodd UCU Caerdydd fandad ar gyfer Gweithredu Diwydiannol, a barhaodd tan fis Hydref 2022, o ganlyniad i bleidlais ‘IE’ aruthrol gan ei haelodau. Ers hynny mae’r Undeb Prifysgolion a Cholegau wedi cyhoeddi y bydd Boicot Marcio ac Asesu yn cychwyn ar 23 Mai, ynghyd â mathau eraill o weithredu sydd eto i’w cadarnhau.

Bydd Undeb y Myfyrwyr yn parhau i gefnogi staff y Brifysgol a myfyrwyr ymchwil ôl-raddedig drwy gydol y cam hwn. Rydym yn deall yn iawn pam fod angen y camau hyn, a gwyddom nad yw hwn yn benderfyniad y mae staff wedi’i wneud yn ysgafn. Mae’r materion hirdymor a wynebir gan staff ar draws y sector Addysg Uwch yn niweidiol i brofiad ac addysg ein myfyrwyr, yng Nghaerdydd ac ar draws gweddill y sector Ôl-16.

Fodd bynnag, rydym ni fel Tîm Swyddogion Sabothol yn ymwybodol o'r effaith enfawr y mae hyn yn debygol o'i chael ar y corff myfyrwyr. Mae’r tarfu posibl ar fyfyrwyr o ganlyniad i Boicot Marcio ac Asesu yn enfawr, a gallai olygu bod nifer o fyfyrwyr yn wynebu oedi wrth gael canlyniadau. Felly mae er lles y myfyrwyr bod yr anghydfod hwn yn dod i ben cyn gynted â phosibl.

Mae methiant parhaus y Brifysgol i weithredu ar yr anghydfodau a godwyd gan staff yn effeithio ar brofiad myfyrwyr ar bob lefel. Byddwn yn parhau i lobïo'r Brifysgol i gwrdd â gofynion UCU wrth y bwrdd trafod, ac rydym yn ymgyrchu'n gryf yn erbyn toriadau cyflog 100% sydd wedi'u bygwth mewn mannau eraill yn y sector.

Rydym wedi diweddaru ein tudalen Cwestiynau Cyffredin am Streiciau yn ddiweddar a byddwn yn parhau i wneud hynny pan fydd mwy o wybodaeth ar gael. Gellir anfon unrhyw gwestiynau pellach at Orla Tarn, IL Ôl-raddedig, at VPPostgraduate@cardiff.ac.uk.
