Cardiff Students’ Union has welcomed a new Full-Time Welsh Language, Community & Culture Officer during this year’s Spring Elections, being the first time this role has been introduced as a Full-Time role.

The annual Spring Elections took place throughout March, where 40 candidates put forward manifestos that contained the ideas and principles of their campaigns. There were seven positions for Full-Time Sabbatical Officers up for grabs, with the introduction of a VP Welsh Language, Community & Culture role as a Full-Time role for the first time in Cardiff Students’ Union’s history.

Deio Owen received 5,171 votes and was elected VP Welsh Language, Community & Culture on Saturday 11th March.

Deio explained what it means to him to achieve this role: “It has been a long journey to reach this point and get a full-time position for Welsh language representation, and I am extremely grateful for the work done by students before me.”

“To be able to hold this role for the first time is a privilege and gives me the chance to set out how this role will work and develop over time. This also helps us show that Cardiff is not just a University in Wales, but a Welsh University. This is the start of an exciting chapter here in Cardiff and I look forward to see what is to come in the future, near and far.”

Deio was part of the student group that lobbied for the VP Welsh Language, Community and Culture position to become available in the first place. His manifesto included promises of representing all Welsh students, securing Welsh opportunities, working with other Students’ Unions, giving every student a Welsh welcome, and working towards a bilingual website for the SU.

Sabbatical Officers play a huge role within Cardiff Students’ Union, and with the support of the Campaign Officers, are the voice of students, being as representative as they possibly can.

Across five days of voting, 7,507 students cast their votes on each of the officer roles, accumulating over 102,000 votes.

Mae Undeb Myfyrwyr Caerdydd wedi croesawu Swyddog Iaith, Cymuned a Diwylliant Cymru Llawn Amser newydd yn ystod Etholiadau'r Gwanwyn eleni, sef y tro cyntaf i'r rôl hon gael ei chyflwyno fel rôl Llawn Amser.

Cynhaliwyd Etholiadau blynyddol y gwanwyn drwy gydol mis Mawrth, lle cyflwynodd 40 o ymgeiswyr faniffestos a oedd yn cynnwys syniadau ac egwyddorion eu hymgyrchoedd. Roedd saith swydd ar gyfer Swyddogion Sabothol Llawn Amser ar gael, gan gynnwys rôl IL Iaith, Cymuned a Diwylliant Cymru a gafodd ei gyflwyno fel rôl llawn amser am y tro cyntaf yn hanes Undeb Myfyrwyr Caerdydd.

Derbyniodd Deio Owen 5,171 o bleidleisiau a chafodd ei ethol yn IL Iaith, Cymuned a Diwylliant Cymru ar ddydd Sadwrn 11eg o Fawrth.

Esboniodd Deio beth mae'n ei olygu iddo i ddal y swydd hon: "Bu'n daith hir i gyrraedd y pwynt hwn a chael swydd llawn amser ar gyfer cynrychiolaeth yr iaith Gymraeg, ac rwy'n hynod ddiolchgar am y gwaith a wnaed gan fyfyrwyr o'm blaen."

"Mae gallu dal y swydd hon am y tro cyntaf yn fraint ac yn rhoi cyfle i mi osod allan sut y bydd y rôl hon yn gweithio a datblygu dros amser. Mae hyn hefyd yn ein helpu i ddangos mai nid prifysgol yng Nghymru yn unig yw Caerdydd, ond Prifysgol Cymreig. Dyma ddechrau pennod cyffrous yma yng Nghaerdydd a dwi’n edrych ‘mlaen at weld beth sydd i ddod yn y dyfodol, yn agos ac yn bell."

Roedd Deio yn rhan o’r grŵp myfyrwyr a ymgyrchodd dros gael swydd IL Iaith, Cymuned a Diwylliant Cymru llawn amser yn y lle cyntaf. Roedd maniffesto Deio’n cynnwys addewidion o gynrychioli holl fyfyrwyr Cymru, sicrhau cyfleoedd cyfrwng Cymraeg, gweithio gydag Undebau Myfyrwyr eraill, rhoi croeso Cymreig i bob myfyriwr, a gweithio tuag at wefan ddwyieithog ar gyfer Undeb Myfyrwyr Caerdydd.

Mae Swyddogion Sabothol yn chwarae rhan enfawr o fewn Undeb Myfyrwyr Caerdydd, a gyda chefnogaeth y Swyddogion Ymgyrchu, nhw yw llais y myfyrwyr ac maent yn anelu i gynrychioli cymaint o fyfyrwyr ag y gallant.

Ar draws pum diwrnod o bleidleisio, fe wnaeth 7,507 o fyfyrwyr fwrw eu pleidleisiau ar bob un o rolau'r swyddogion, felly cyfanswm o 102,000 o bleidleisiau.
