Global clothing sales reached $1.5 trillion in 2021 not surprising when everyone loves shopping! But what impact does this have on the environment? The average cotton t-shirt can release just over 2kg of carbon dioxide equivalent into the atmosphere and the fashion industry accounts for 8-10% of all global carbon emissions – that’s more than aviation and shipping combined! The shocking impact of our shopping habits is becoming more and more clear with the research into climate change causes forever increasing, but how can we help?

We’ve got some great tips to get even the most avid fashionistas to reduce their clothing consumption!

Repeating Outfits

41% of 18–25-year-olds felt pressure to wear a different outfit every time they go out (especially felt in young women at 47%) and 1 in 6 young people don’t feel they can wear an outfit again once it’s been seen on social media. Not surprising with the messages of the horrors of outfit repeating shown on social media.

But there are great ways to reuse clothing in your wardrobe even if you’re not fully onboard for full outfit repeating! Try changing the garments used together in an outfit to create a different look! Or you can just change the accessories to give a different vibe to an outfit. This can make a fun activity to do with your friends to give you different ideas, and means you’ve got loads of ideas next time you’re going out!

Second Hand Clothing

Buying second hand clothing is a great way to get new clothes, without the huge environmental impact of producing clothing! Known as “thrifting”, this is becoming a widespread trend on social media such as Tik Tok. You can find great things at cheaper prices (who doesn’t like saving money?), while still keeping the buzz of shopping!

One method of doing this is charity shops, and you’re in luck because Cardiff has a great variety of charity shops! There’s a wide range of charity shops on Crwys Road and Albany Road, meaning they’re conveniently located near many student houses. Our top pick if you’re willing to travel a bit, is the Cancer Research Superstore in the East of the City. This charity shop is one of just 30 across the whole of the UK and is much bigger than most traditional charity shops, plus prices are all below £5 meaning that it is extremely affordable as well! The extra benefit of charity shops is the fact that you’re giving back to charity, as well as the environment.

Another second-hand source is a great option for those who love online shopping! Depop and Vinted are online second-hand clothing websites and apps where people can sell their clothes that they don’t want any more. You can find some great items without even having to leave your bed! This is also a great method to earn some extra cash if you have clothes you don’t want as well, as someone else is likely to want something similar!

Finally, if you want to create a unique style that will make you stand out from the crowd, Vintage Shops are a great idea! Cardiff is known for its vintage shops in the arcades, and our very own store in the Students Union (), where you can find pieces that often quite rare. You’re not going to find someone in the same outfit as you when shopping in here!

Clothing Swaps

As much of 73% of clothes in UK wardrobes weren’t worn last year, meaning that there is a great untapped source of clothing here! Get your friends together with clothes that they don’t wear any more and swap clothes to create a whole new wardrobe. If you don’t want to give your pieces away, you can do it for a moth or so and then give the clothing back! This method is very versatile, and more importantly, completely free while giving you an evening to enjoy your friends’ company and chat about fashion!

Repairing Clothes

Everyone has that item of clothing that they love and then the button has fallen off, but don’t chuck it away, repair it! Most clothing breakages can easily be fixed with some hand sewing and there are many clothing repair tutorials on YouTube, such as this video which teaches you how to sew broken seams and other social media sites to help you with it! This helps prevent clothing from going into landfill.

Upcycling

Reinventing the clothes you don’t wear can be great fun and gives you brand new unique clothes to wear without the environmental damage! There are many different ways you can rework or combine items of clothing together to create a whole new look for it! Methods such as dyeing clothes, altering their length, or, if you’re feeling ambitious, making a whole new garment are great ways to create new clothes while having a laugh!

Any ways to reduce your clothing consumption is great, so don’t feel you have to do it all at once! Just start working on a few methods and then you’ll be an environmental fashionista in no time!
