Have you come to the end of your university experience?  

Are you thinking of applying for Graduate jobs but don’t know where to start? 

Look no further!  

I’ve done the research, started my own search and put together a list of the best places to look, tips on how to improve your applications, and some mistakes to avoid.

Why should I look for a Graduate job? 

While students have struggled in the past few years with only 52% able to secure a graduate-level job, the Institute of Student Employers (ISE) have found the number of graduate role vacancies is rising and will increase by more than a 20% this year, which is great news!  

Securing a graduate role can help kick start your career by gaining relevant experience with support, a high earning potential and job security.   

Your degree will open-up many opportunities in the area that you study and beyond. But if you’re no longer interested in your subject, don’t fear, there are still a huge range of roles that you can go into which your time at university will have helped prepare you for.  

First things first, prepare for your search. So far, I’ve found it useful to:  

• Create a well presented Curriculum Vitae (CV) template. I used the National Careers Service  page for CV advice and tips on what to include and how to lay out a CV for maximum impact. 
  • Top tip: Tailoring your CV to each job can really help you stand out! 
  • Don’t include photos as these gives pictorial impressions to employers and your image should remain hidden until interviews or other events.
• Have an idea of the field you would like to work. For me this is Marketing, so I can narrow my search to this field. 
  • Research the companies you think you may like to work for. For me this is a large company with plenty of opportunities to join different departments, work internationally and develop my skills on a training based graduate scheme.
  • If you are interested in a smaller company, then look at start-ups and smaller firms. Although they may not offer ‘Graduate schemes’ they will have some pretty incredible opportunities to learn and develop. 

Next, it’s a matter of where to look… 

Graduate Coach have a list of the many platforms promoting graduate jobs, from their own site to Bright Network and Graduate Land. In addition, they have area specific recommendations such as Gradcracker for STEM students, The Dots for creatives and Digital Grads for tech-based roles.   

Personally, I have found Target Jobs very helpful. The site has a clear layout and a filter function, allowing you to view positions within the sector or company you want to work for. They also send a weekly job recommendation email, that is based on your browsing history, location preferences and interests.  

Similarly, Prospects is the UK’s biggest graduate careers website. With more than two million users a month, it has something for everyone. I used this as a starting point when I was unsure what roles would best suit to me. The most useful thing I’ve found about Prospects is that it has shown me potential opportunities that I wouldn’t have even considered! 

Finally, some tips for how to improve your application and mistakes to avoid! 

Remember! 

1. Do your research on each company you are thinking of working for before you apply. I found this really important to get a feel for the company, and whether I would be a happy there. It also helped me when writing applications. 
2. Highlight other skills and achievements alongside academic ones. Tailoring the ‘Personal Specification’ on applications to fit the relevant role allowed me to showcase skills to the employer I have all the skills they need for the role. For example, when asked for ‘clear and concise communication skills’ I was able to describe successfully working on a group project where ‘clarity and precision were fundamental to meet deadlines’. 
3. Use past tense “objectives” language when identifying tasks carried out e.g., activated, co-ordinated, delivered, initiated, organised, produced.
4. Make sure you use the STAR method when writing applications and answering questions at job interviews. 

Mistakes to avoid:  

• Sending a generic application that doesn’t meet specific ‘Person Specifications.’ Prospects state that this rarely has positive outcomes as employers infer a lack of time and effort in the application 
• Making unsubstantiated claims. Graduate Jobs suggest that while embellishment is acceptable practice, this should never be taken too far, claims should always be able to be backed up and employers will cross-reference between the documents that you submit to ensure experiences match-up.   
• Poorly selected references – make sure that they are relevant to what you are applying for or the skills that you are wanting to show. It is best to have at least two references. As a graduate, a professional reference (from any earlier work experience or placements) and an academic reference (from your personal tutor or course coordinator) is best. Make sure that they are happy for their details to be given within the application before you submit a job application! 
• Showing a lack of enthusiasm or excitement. The process of applying for jobs can be long-winded, but it is important that you keep up the enthusiasm for the role you are applying or interviewing for. I found this really helped in building a rapport when being interviewed for a role.  
• Applications that are poorly spelt or use incorrect grammar. Use of apostrophe “s” in wrong places.

Rwyf wedi gwneud yr ymchwil, wedi dechrau fy chwiliad fy hun ac wedi llunio rhestr o'r lleoedd gorau i edrych, awgrymiadau ar sut i wella'ch ceisiadau, a rhai camgymeriadau i'w hosgoi.

Pam ddylwn i chwilio am swydd i Raddedigion? 

Er bod myfyrwyr wedi cael trafferth yn yr ychydig flynyddoedd diwethaf gyda dim ond 52% yn gallu sicrhau swydd ar lefel graddedig, mae Sefydliad y Myfyrwyr-Cyflogwyr (ISE) wedi canfod bod nifer y swyddi gwag ar gyfer rolau graddedigion yn cynyddu a bydd yn cynyddu mwy nag 20% y flwyddyn hon, sy'n newyddion gwych!

Mae sicrhau rôl am raddedigion yn helpu i roi hwb i'ch gyrfa trwy ennill profiad perthnasol gyda chefnogaeth, potensial enillion uchel a sicrwydd swydd.

Yn gyntaf, paratowch eich chwiliad. Hyd yn hyn, rwyf wedi ei chael yn ddefnyddiol i:  

• Creu templed Curriculum Vitae (CV). Defnyddiais y Wasanaeth Gyrfaoedd Cenedlaethol ar gyfer cyngor CV ac awgrymiadau ar beth i'w gynnwys a sut i osod CV i gael yr effaith fwyaf.
  • Syniadau Da: Gall teilwra eich CV i bob swydd er mwyn eich helpu i sefyll allan!
  • Peidiwch â chynnwys lluniau gan fod y rhain yn rhoi argraffiadau darluniadol i gyflogwyr a dylai eich delwedd aros yn gudd tan gyfweliadau neu ddigwyddiadau eraill.

• Ceisiwch benderfynu ar ba fath o faes yr hoffech chi weithio ynddo. I mi, Marchnata yw hwn, felly gallaf gyfyngu fy chwiliad i'r maes hwn.
• Ymchwiliwch i'r cwmnïau y credwch yr hoffech weithio iddynt. I mi, mae hwn yn gwmni mawr gyda digon o gyfleoedd i ymuno â gwahanol adrannau, gweithio'n rhyngwladol a datblygu fy sgiliau ar gynllun graddedigion sy'n seiliedig ar hyfforddiant.
  • Os oes gennych ddiddordeb mewn cwmni llai, yna edrychwch ar fusnesau newydd a chwmnïau llai. Er efallai na fyddant yn cynnig 'Cynlluniau Graddedigion' bydd ganddynt rai cyfleoedd eithaf anhygoel i ddysgu a datblygu.

Nesaf, mae'n fater o ble i edrych ... 

Mae gan Graduate Coach restr o'r llwyfannau niferus sy'n hyrwyddo swyddi graddedigion, o'u gwefan eu hunain i Bright Network a Graduate Land. Yn olaf, rhai awgrymiadau ar sut i wella'ch cais a chamgymeriadau i'w hosgoi! 

Cofiwch!

1. Gwnewch eich ymchwil ar bob cwmni yr ydych yn meddwl gweithio iddo cyn i chi wneud cais. Roedd hyn yn bwysig iawn i mi gael teimlad o'r cwmni, ac a fyddwn i'n hapus yno. Roedd hefyd o gymorth i mi wrth ysgrifennu ceisiadau.

1. Tynnwch sylw at sgiliau a chyflawniadau eraill ochr yn ochr â rhai academaidd. Roedd teilwra'r 'Ffanyleb Bersonol' ar geisiadau i gyd-fynd â'r rôl berthnasol yn fy ngalluogi i arddangos sgiliau i'r cyflogwr mae gennyf yr holl sgiliau sydd eu hangen arnynt ar gyfer y rôl. Er enghraifft, pan ofynnwyd am 'sgiliau cyfathrebu clir a chryno' roeddwn yn gallu disgrifio gweithio'n llwyddiannus ar brosiect grwp lle'r oedd 'eglurder a manwl gywirdeb yn hanfodol i gwrdd â therfynau amser'.
2. Defnyddio iaith “amcanion” y gorffennol wrth nodi tasgau a gyflawnir ee, wedi'u hysgogi, eu cydlynu, eu cyflwyno, eu cychwyn, eu trefnu, eu cynhyrchu.
3. Gwnewch yn siwr eich bod yn defnyddio'r dull STAR wrth ysgrifennu ceisiadau ac ateb cwestiynau mewn cyfweliadau swyddi.

Camgymeriadau i'w hosgoi:

• Anfon cymhwysiad generig nad yw'n bodloni 'Manylebau Person' penodol. Mae Prospects datgan mai anaml y bydd hyn yn arwain at ganlyniadau cadarnhaol gan fod cyflogwyr yn awgrymu bod diffyg amser ac ymdrech yn y cais.
• Gwneud hawliadau di-sail. Mae Graduate Jobs yn awgrymu, er bod addurno yn arfer derbyniol, na ddylid byth fynd â hyn yn rhy bell, y dylid bob amser allu ategu hawliadau a bydd cyflogwyr yn croesgyfeirio rhwng y dogfennau a gyflwynwch i sicrhau bod profiadau yn cyd-fynd.

• Geirda gwael - gwnewch yn siwr bod eich geirda yn berthnasol i'r hyn yr ydych yn gwneud cais amdano neu'r sgiliau yr ydych am eu dangos. Mae'n well cael o leiaf ddau eirda. Fel myfyriwr graddedig, mae geirda proffesiynol (o unrhyw brofiad gwaith neu leoliadau cynharach) a geirda academaidd (gan eich tiwtor personol neu gydlynydd cwrs) sydd orau. Gwnewch yn siwr eu bod yn hapus i'w manylion gael eu rhoi yn y cais cyn i chi gyflwyno cais am swydd!
• Dangos diffyg brwdfrydedd neu gyffro. Gall y broses o wneud cais am swyddi fod yn un hirwyntog, ond mae'n bwysig eich bod yn parhau i fod yn frwd dros y rôl yr ydych yn ymgeisio amdani neu'n cyfweld ar ei chyfer. Roedd hyn yn help mawr i feithrin perthynas wrth gael fy nghyfweld ar gyfer rôl.
• Ceisiadau sydd wedi'u sillafu'n wael neu sy'n defnyddio gramadeg anghywir. Defnyddio collnod mewn mannau anghywir.
