‘That’s discrimination.’ Healthcare issues facing the LGBTQ+ Community

'I don't think I would know anything about LGBTQ+ healthcare had I not been in a same-sex relationship myself.'

Whilst LGBTQ+ History Month may be over, it’s important to continue the conversation of ongoing issues within the LGBTQ+ community. In this conversation, Shreshth, your VP Societies and Volunteering, is joined by Rachel, a 4th year medical student and the President of HEAL Society (Healthcare, Equality and Advocacy for LGBTQIA+). The pair discuss the ongoing issues in healthcare education, as well as the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community accessing it.

This is something which affects most members of the community, from people accessing PrEP, to individuals accessing life-changing trans healthcare. During the conversation, Rachel highlights the growing problem that ‘85% of medical students who said that when they finished their training, they hadn’t received any training on LGBT health needs’.

This lack of education is hugely impactful on the needs of the LGBTQ+ community, because not teaching these topics effectively means a large proportion of the population aren't getting adequate healthcare… “and that's discrimination.”

'Mae hynny'n wahaniaethu.' Materion gofal iechyd sy'n wynebu'r Gymuned LHDTC+

'Dw i ddim yn meddwl y byddwn i'n gwybod dim am ofal iechyd LHDTC+ os nad o’n i wedi bod mewn perthynas o'r un rhyw fy hun.'

Er y gallai Mis Hanes LHDCT+ ddod i ben, mae'n bwysig parhau â'r sgwrs am broblemau parhaus o fewn y gymuned LHDTC+. Yn y sgwrs hon, mae Shreshth, eich Is-Lywydd Cymdeithasau a Gwirfoddoli, yn cael cwmni Rachel, myfyriwr meddygol yn y 4edd flwyddyn a Llywydd Cymdeithas HEAL (Gofal Iechyd, Cydraddoldeb ac Eiriolaeth ar gyfer LHDTCRhA+). Mae'r pâr yn trafod y materion parhaus mewn addysg gofal iechyd, yn ogystal â'r heriau a wynebir gan y gymuned LHDTC+ wrth gael mynediad ato.

Mae hyn yn rhywbeth sy'n effeithio ar y rhan fwyaf o aelodau'r gymuned, o bobl sy'n defnyddio PrEP, i unigolion sy'n cael mynediad at ofal iechyd traws sy'n newid bywydau. Yn ystod y sgwrs, mae Rachel yn tynnu sylw at y broblem gynyddol sef bod '85% o fyfyrwyr meddygol a ddywedodd pan wnaethon nhw orffen eu hyfforddiant, nad oeddent wedi derbyn unrhyw hyfforddiant ar anghenion iechyd LHDT'.

Mae’r diffyg addysg hwn yn cael effaith aruthrol ar anghenion y gymuned LHDTC+, oherwydd mae peidio ag addysgu’r pynciau hyn yn effeithiol yn golygu nad yw cyfran fawr o’r boblogaeth yn cael gofal iechyd digonol… “a gwahaniaethu yw hynny.”

Gwrandewch ar y sgwrs isod i gael gwybod!
