Welcome to Cardiff University Tennis Club
*Updated for Academic Year 20/21*
One of Cardiff Uni's biggest clubs with over 200 members last year and 8 BUCS teams
COVID-19 Update: Whilst all sports have been affected by COVID we feel lucky that tennis can still be played and we are anticipating lots of new members this year, we can't wait to meet you all! Unfortunately, funding for all sports has been decreased dramatically by the Athletic Union who usually pay for the majority of our venue hire. For this reason we are having to increase the membership for this academic year, this was not an easy decision to make but we simply had to do it to fund the activities for the whole year. The tennis club does not make any profit - all money raised through membership goes directly back to the paying members. Membership prices can be seen at the bottom of the page. We hope you can understand our situation and help us to have an amazing year!
To keep up to date our Facebook page is by far the best resource, request to join today!
***COVID UPDATE*** - All players will need to download Spond (An organisational App) as all sessions will be planned through there. The Wednesday afternoon slots will be split into slots now with a max of 30 attendees. We will be cleaning all equipment for 15 minutes between usage and making sure the environment is as safe as is possible.
Session 1 - 12:00-13:15
Session 2 - 13:30-14:45
Session 3 - 15:00-16:15
Players of any ability are welcome, whether you're an experienced player or have never picked up a racket before! If you want to have a hit there are plenty of like-minded people looking to play. Our social league which runs every Wednesday 12:00-16:30pm is a great opportunity to have a hit, casual or competitive. We provide tennis balls throughout the year and also have a limited number of rackets to lend out as well. This is run by our Social League Manager, who will find you an opponent and record match results onto an online spreadsheet updated weekly. At our Annual General Meeting at the end of the year there are prizes for those at the top of the league!
In addition to this, we have a session from 4:30-7:30pm on a Sunday evening, the perfect way to end the weekend! This will run in the same way. 2 slots of 1 hours and 15 minutes. Feel free to come along with your friends for a hit! If there is interest then some of the committee members (many of whom are qualified coaches) will run some fun group games.
All this takes place at our associate tennis club, Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club, which is located in the centre of Cardiff by the Castle, just a 5 minute walk from the Student's Union. The club has 11 courts of mixed surfaces – 4 acrylic, 4 hard court and 3 brand new artificial clay courts! The clubhouse has a bar and serves hot food, as well as offering stringing services and cheap rackets.
If you need equipment then we have great links with local business and if you need restringing there are several members who string for the cheapest rates you can find!

Cardiff Uni is becoming a recognised high perfomance Tennis University - building credibility year by year. Our team ethos is for inclusion of team players through squad training sessions and refreshed weekly team allocations. Our fixtures take place on Wednesday at House of Sport nextdoor to premier league side Cardiff City's stadium. We have had some great success over the last year with promotions from the men's and ladies' team. We hope to continue the impressive and growing success over the last 5 years and use this strange year to improve even more. There will also be opportunities to do coaching courses and coach other members of the society too. Come and be a part of our team and we will prove that tennis is no longer an individual sport.

***COVID Update*** - We will be taking a great deal of responsibility this year in making the correct precautions for Coronavirus but equally we still want this year to be as fun as ever. We endeavour to organise as many fun activities as possible whilst also following the most up to date rules with no exceptions.
Wednesday night socials define sports societies at Cardiff and the Tennis club know how to do it right. We have had so much success over the past years and last year we had an incredible 110 people turn up to our first 'tennis whites' social at our home of Gassy Jacks. Throughout the year we journey through the weird and wonderful in terms of wardrobe and hold plenty of non-alcoholic events and socials as well. This year we are going to improve things even more for our 200 members and a new twist to our socials, on top of wacky fancy dress we will be hosting a series of games and activities to help everyone's night along in the traditional way.
Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club is located in Bute Park and we have great access to using this area for controlled society meet-ups which is a big bonus too!
- We want to attract even more social members to the club. Try us, you won't regret it. The socials are also a great place to find new hitting partners and meet new friends!
***COVID UPDATE*** - Details TBC but lessons will be happening as per previous years!
Between 12-3pm on a Wednesday afternoon the club offers beginner and intermediate tennis lessons, each guaranteed to have a maximum of 8 players. These lessons are run by John Williams, the head coach of Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club and one of the most talented coaches in the country, winning the prestigious Welsh Coach of the Year award as well as coaching several national standard players and numerous county and regional players as well. These lessons are available to purchase on the CUTC website from the Sunday evening before the coming Wednesday for just £1! Considering the standard of coaching available and the massive improvement often shown over the year by people who attend regularly, this is an opportunity not to be missed!
CUTC is run by an elected committee of 16 members (8 General, 7 Captains) who ensure the club runs smoothly and handle things such as socials, finance and court bookings. This year's committee members are listed at the bottom of this page. If you have any questions about joining the club or just about life as a Cardiff uni student in general then feel free to give any one of us a message on facebook or email the President Dom Pearson at FentonT@cardiff.ac.uk! We look forward to meeting you all in september!
People seeking a refund must contact the President, who will then present their case to the rest of the committee for consideration. Each request will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
Please log in to view the committee.
