What kit do I need?
You don't need to buy any of your own equipment unless you want to. We have all the climbing equipment that you could ever need on hand, although most people end up buying their own gear.
Can I come if I've never climbed before?
Yes of course! That's exactly what our Give It a Go sessions are designed for, and you'll get to meet other beginners. But if you missed them, don't worry, we teach people how to climb throughout the whole year.
Isn't it expensive?
Climbing can be expensive if you're doing it by yourself. But as a club we aim to make it as cheap as possible by subsidising trips, teaching you skills for free, and providing you with the equipment.
How dangerous or safe is it?
Climbing (when done correctly) is very safe! We're here to show you the ropes and how to keep yourself from getting injured while still having fun.
What if I only want to go bouldering/route climbing?
You're able to choose exactly what you want to do! Most of our trips offer both bouldering and rope climbing, however there are a couple that focus on one discipline.
Where do you climb in Cardiff?
We have 2 local climbing gyms in Cardiff. Flashpoint is a bouldering-only gym with grades from VB all the way up to V11+! We also have Boulders which is mainly focused on roped climbing but has a bouldering area too. Both gyms also have training boards, weights, yoga-mats, hangboards, and cafes too.
How do you get to Boulders or Flashpoint?
If getting the minibus there for a club session, we meet outside The Bagel Place at the back of the SU at 18:10. Driving and cycling is posssible to both the gyms, but it would take a while if you wanted to walk to them. You can also get to Flashpoint by getting a train to Grangetown.
How do I borrow equipment?
Let our Gear Secretary know what gear you would like to borrow the week before you need it, you'll be able to collect the gear at Taf Monday. Gear must be returned at the next Taf Monday unless otherwise agreed, all gear will be given out on a first come, first serve basis.
Could I just come to the climbing and not the socials or vice versa?
Absolutely! There's no requirement that you come to the socials and there's never any pressure to drink at the socials either but it's good to come along and meet everyone while they're not half way up the wall.
How can I join?
If you head over to the memberships page, you can get started there! If you're an ex-student, you can buy our associate membership and anyone who is external to Cardiff University can buy our external membership.
Do you offer single semester memberships for Erasmus students?
Yes, if you will be studying abroad at Cardiff Uni for a semester you can buy our Erasmus membership. If you will be staying for the whole year then buy our standard membership.
Full time Cardiff Uni students are not allowed to purchase the Erasmus membership.
