The hockey club is an intimate club with a friendly environment and a tradition of success. We have 4 well-integrated men’s teams catering for a range of capabilities from casual to international standard, training and playing twice a week in the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) League and various Saturday leagues.
In the 2016/17 season, the club enjoyed significant success with our 1st team winning promotion to the BUCS Premiership South as well as claiming bronze medals at the European Indoor Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia. This all culminated in the Athletic Union’s Team of the Year award coming our way in April. To add to this, the 2nd and 4th teams both secured promotions in their respective N4 Saturday leagues to ensure that opposition will be ever more competitive in seasons ahead.
At the end of the 2019/20 season, the second team won the legendary treble (Saturday league, BUCS league and the BUCS cup)!
In the 2021/22 season, the 2nd team reached the Big BUCS Final, and while unfortunately taking a narrow defeat in the final, still had a season to be proud of. In the same season, the return of The Welsh Varsity saw the 1st team claim a victory over fierce rivals Swansea, helping Cardiff bring home the Varsity Shield yet again. In recent years these are our most prestigious achievements, others being omitted purely to keep the page a manageable size!
The Social Side:
We have an eventful and varied social calendar with regular post-match socials every Wednesday come rain or shine, win or lose. While we play hard to win on the pitch, we know that a thriving social scene is just as important.
Our weekly socials happen without fail and with a great atmosphere. Added to this, we have the tradition of wearing “ones” to these socials – smart casual dress with our distinct hockey tie, creating a sense of identity. Unique events include the Halloween and Christmas Socials, a black-tie ball, ski trips and a brilliant end-of-season tour over the summer (to name only a few!).
Crucial to all this, our social events take place in conjunction with the Ladies Hockey Club, creating a fantastic atmosphere and making us the largest and most social sports club at Cardiff University!
