Oncology Society

Welcome to the Cardiff University Oncology Society! CUOS was founded in 2016 by a group of medical students with the aim of increasing awareness and understanding of the field of oncology both to students at Cardiff University and to the wider public.

Cancer is a disease which is now predicted to affect 1/2 of us during the course of our lives. Many of us will have had personal experiences of the disease already and may have been impacted profoundly by its influence on our friends and family. Whether you are a student, a doctor or a member of the public, cancer is an increasing part of life on Earth today and understanding what it is, what causes it and what can be done about it is an absolute game-changer.

Oncology is the field of medicine and science concerned with understanding and treating cancer, an effort which involves doctors, nurses, scientists, surgeons, charities, support groups and all manner of health professionals. Over the last 40 years, cancer survival has doubled in the UK and continues to improve. Today, more than half of people diagnosed with cancer will survive the disease for ten years or more thanks to the efforts of cancer researchers and clinical professionals who work to improve quality of life for the patients and their families affected by cancer.

So what do we aim to achieve as a society?

  1. To increase awareness of cancer and its impacts in society today
  2. To educate medical students about the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of different types of cancer
  3. To inspire and promote opportunities to get involved in cancer research, academic projects and clinical experience as an undergraduate
  4. To inspire and promote careers in oncology, research and cancer-related branches of medicine
  5. To enhance public awareness of cancer and provide education events explaining the disease process and treatment of cancer
  6. To provide a platform to support individual fundraising efforts and those of larger events including Cancer Research UK initiatives
  7. To establish contacts with clinical, research-focused and charity-based organisations
