Students' unions are amazingly diverse places to work. We are a membership organisation which is both a commercial company and a charity. The students enrolled at Cardiff University are our members, but we also offer services used by the general public, and by other businesses. In other words, we do a bit of everything! So whatever sector or discipline you are coming from, there's a good chance that we would have a role that would fit your skill and knowledge set. Unless you’re a tree doctor, the only tree we have is a plastic one but we’re still very proud of it.
As we offer so many different services across the organisation, we need a big group of staff to help us make that happen. The biggest group are our temporary student team who are recruited throughout the year to work alongside their studies. There is a smaller team of what we call 'career staff' who work longer term with the organisation, offering a mix of full-time and part-time roles.
What’s in it for you?
We spend a lot of our time helping our students become the most awesome version of themselves so it makes sense that we do the same for our hard working staff.
How do we do that? We make sure that every member of staff has a personal development plan which is reviewed regularly, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills, to undertake training and qualifications, and to learn from people within their field. We also get our staff to set themselves challenging objectives to help them achieve the things they want to through their role.
Show us the money! Obviously as a staff member, you will get paid for the work you do. Our salaries work on a scale system, with staff moving up the scale in yearly increments. We also have a yearly cost of living increase that gets added into the pot.
Working to live, not living to work. We care about our staff and we understand that some people need a flexible approach to their working hours. If needed, we will always consider offering a range of flexible working options that fit with your life commitments.
Taking care of your retirement. All of our staff are automatically enrolled into the NEST Government Pension Scheme if they are over 22 and earn over £10,000. We also offer a scheme with Royal London Pensions, to which the company contributes 4%.
Your 5 a day. Every Monday morning, a delicious delivery of free fruit is left in our staff room to help our team stay healthy. There’s also lots of tea, coffee and milk to keep your hot drink cravings under control during a busy day.
Party time! We also like to kick back and have a good time. Throughout the year, we have plenty of fun activities for staff to take part in, from visits to Christmas markets to cheese and wine evenings. We also host an annual staff awards where we can thank and congratulate everyone for all their hard work. The annual Christmas party is also a chance to have fun and unleash our creative side. In recent years, we’ve transformed our Y Stiwdio venue into Gatsby’s mansion and a 1950s diner!
#5TO5RAVE At the end of a busy week, it's great to release some endorphins through the medium of dance. Every Friday afternoon at 16:55, our Communications Directorate host a 5 minute rave in their office to help staff end the week in style! All dancing abilities are welcome.
Special offers and discounts. As a Students’ Union staff member, you can take advantage of all of the great offers and discounts offered to Cardiff University staff. You can also buy an NUS Totum card to get student discounts online and instore. As if that wasn’t enough, we offer guest list spots to our live music events in the building in exchange for a small charity donation.
Giving something back. We encourage our staff to give something back through volunteering and we will support you in developing yourself outside of your day to day job.
