Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of what we do at Cardiff University Students' Union. Our organisational vision is clear: to work with every Cardiff student to enhance their University experience. This is underpinned by our values that recognise we want to be excellent at what we do by being totally inclusive. We believe that to be truly representative we need all our students and staff to have a stake in the Union’s success.

As an employer, we want to attract a diverse and varied workforce who live and breathe our inclusive values, and who treat themselves, each other and our students with dignity and respect.

We want our staff to continually work to make sure our services are available to all on a non-discriminatory basis, and to provide a safe, supportive and welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors.

How do we do that?

The right systems: We have an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy that lays out what we need to know as employees. It also clarifies roles and responsibilities and ensures we are meeting our legal requirements in these important areas.

The right input: We have a Developing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group who meet to discuss how we’re doing now, and what we could be doing better in the future. This group is open to all staff at all levels of the organisation and provides safe space to discuss ideas and improvements.

The right standards: In 2016, we were proud to achieve the Investors in Diversity Award and are continuing work to ensure we meet this standard on an ongoing basis. In 2020, we also celebrating 2 years as a Disability Confident Employer and ranked 65th in the National Centre for Diversity Awards. While we’re thrilled with these achievements, we know there’s lots of work still to do and areas that we could do better in.

The right people: When we recruit, we want to attract a broad range of candidates who not only have values that match ours, but also bring a unique perspective and different ideas. That’s how we can continue to grow and learn, and to create a culture where different ideas and views are championed.
