Llongyfarchiadau to all our talented student competitors who took part in the 2026 Welsh Varsity tournament, you should all be very proud of your performance and the hard work that led up to today!

More than 10,000 student spectators came to cheer as Team Cardiff battled Swansea on home turf for the second year in a row, for the coveted Varsity Shield and Rugby Cup.

Varsity is still one of the largest student sporting events in the UK and an unforgettable rite of passage for all our students, whether they’re competing or cheering from the stands.

This year’s tournament returned to the capital, seeing Cardiff take on the Swans on our home ground once again. As always, there was an incredible atmosphere and we’d like to say a big thank you to our Team Cardiff supporters who have rallied the teams since the tournament began on the 18th April. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. And a big congratulations and diolch to Swansea for your hard work and everyone who came to support from Abertawe.

Molly, your VP Sports and AU President, is thrilled with the achievements of Tim Caerdydd for winning the Shield AND Cup and to all our supporters that cheered them on!

“What a day! It was great to see Team Cardiff take over our city today. Big congratulations to all the athletes who competed and helped us ensure that the Shield and the Cup stay in the capital for another year, you’re all stars! A huge thank you to everyone who wore red, painted their faces and created supportive signs - your contribution was huge in the victory and the success of the day. Getting to lift the shield at the end of the day was a moment that will stay with me for years to come, thank you all again for your support and big congratulations, Up the 'Diff!”

Women’s Rugby captain, Gabriela Della-Savina is super proud of her teammates and their efforts this season:

“Everyone involved in the club has put in an incredible amount of work this season, from players and coaches to physios and the wider committee. Winning Varsity is a reflection of that collective effort and the commitment shown week in, week out. It’s a brilliant way to finish the season, and we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved together”

Welsh Varsity provides an opportunity for the whole student community to come together and celebrate the diversity in student sport at Cardiff University. From football to fencing, water polo to ultimate frisbee and triathlon to tennis, the Welsh Varsity tournament represents the culmination of a year of hard work and preparation from all our athletes.

2026 has been a strong year for Team Cardiff, something we hope to see for many years to come.
