Jake, your VP Postgraduate Students, discusses how to afford a Master's degree

Working out how to afford a Master's degree can be a headache for many considering further study. The fees are different, the loans are different, the course is structured differently and up until relatively recently there was no student finance for Master's degrees. As VP Postgraduate I decided to hold a series of talks over the last few months called “How to afford a Master's”. This article covers the key information from the talks that everyone needs to know if they’re considering doing a Master's.

First, English and Welsh government postgraduate loans. These aren’t dependent on family income so everyone can get one as long as they are under 60 and don’t already have a Master's degree. However you can only get one to study a full 180 credits Master's degree. Postgraduate qualifications below Master's level, such as the PGCE and the GDL, aren’t eligible. Integrated Master's students can carry on receiving undergraduate student finance.

The average cost of a UK Masters is around £8,000, and some can cost considerably more, so many students find they need extra income to manage.

If your permanent home address is in England, the loan will be worth £10,609 in 2018/19. If your home address is in Wales, you can borrow £13,000. There aren’t separate maintenance loans for postgraduate study like at undergraduate. Higher Education is devolved to the Welsh Government who have chosen to provide a higher level of financial support. The Welsh Government have also given Welsh universities funding to offer Welsh students studying in Wales £3,400 of extra non-repayable support. At Cardiff this will be a fee discount, at Swansea it will be a bursary and other Welsh unis are managing it differently again.

EU students previously resident in England will, as with their undergraduate finance, be covered by the English system. EU students who came to Wales will, like Undergrad, be eligible for the Welsh loan. Universities often offer scholarships to international students for postgraduate study.

The English and Welsh loans are paid directly to students, not to the university, so you’ll have to pay the university directly. You will be paid your loan in thirds. Both have to be repaid as 6% of earnings over £21,000, though with the undergraduate repayment threshold having just risen to £25,000, this too may rise.

The average cost of a UK Master's is around £8,000, and some can cost considerably more, so many students find they need extra income to manage. Cardiff University offers a competitive Master's Excellence Scholarship in the form of a £3,000 fee discount. If you’re considering applying somewhere else, see if they offer a bursary or scholarship scheme. As Cardiff students you can access the Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding, a guide which lists many charities and organisations who you can apply for funding from. Talk to University Advice and Money to discuss what benefit payments you may also be eligible for.

Working part time to earn extra income is more common at postgraduate level than undergraduate level.

Working part time to earn extra income is more common at postgraduate level than undergraduate level. Our Students’ Union Jobshop advertises part time and casual vacancies all over Cardiff and I’ve always found the University Careers service to be very helpful. Like me, you might choose to study your Master's part-time over two years as many postgrads do. I found this gave me a lot more time to work and earn alongside my degree, and the two years will still fly by. Bear in mind though this will affect your loan instalments and council tax exemption.

For more tips and advice on how to afford a Master's I’d recommend the FindAMasters and Targetpostgrad websites. You can also contact the university’s Advice and Money team, Students’ Union Student Advice or email me at VPPostgraduate@cardiff.ac.uk. Good luck with your next step.

Dyma Jake, IL yr Ôl-raddedigion, yn trafod sut mae fforddio gradd Meistr

Gall gweithio allan sut mae fforddio gradd Meistr roi pen tost i lawer o fyfyrwyr sy’n ystyried astudiaeth bellach. Mae’r ffioedd yn wahanol, mae’r benthyciadau’n wahanol, mae’r cwrs yn cael ei strwythuro’n wahanol a than yn ddiweddar, doedd dim cyllid i fyfyrwyr ar gyfer graddau Meistr. Fel IL yr Ôl-raddedigion, penderfynais i gynnal cyfres o sesiynau dros yr ychydig fisoedd diwethaf o’r enw “Sut mae fforddio Meistr”. Bydd yr erthygl hon yn sôn am yr wybodaeth allweddol o’r sesiynau y bydd angen i bawb ei gwybod os ydyn nhw’n ystyried gwneud Meistr.

Yn gyntaf, benthyciadau llywodraeth Cymru a Lloegr. Dydy’r rhain ddim yn dibynnu ar incwm y teulu felly gall pawb gael un cyhyd â’u bod nhw dan 60 oed a does dim gradd Meistr ganddyn nhw eisoes. Fodd bynnag, cewch fenthyciad dim ond os byddwch chi’n astudio gradd Meistr sydd â 180 o gredydau. Dydy cymwysterau islaw lefel Meistr, fel y TAR a’r Diploma Graddedig yn y Gyfraith, ddim yn gymwys. Gall myfyrwyr Meistr integredig barhau i gael cyllid i fyfyrwyr israddedig.

Cost Meistr yn y DU ar gyfartaledd yw tua £8,000, a gall rhai gostio llawer mwy, felly mae llawer o fyfyrwyr yn teimlo bod angen incwm ychwanegol arnynt i fyw.

Os ydy eich cyfeiriad cartref parhaol yn Lloegr, bydd y benthyciad gwerth £10,609 yn 2018/19. Os ydy eich cyfeiriad cartref yng Nghymru, cewch fenthyg £13,000. Does dim benthyciad cynhaliaeth gwahanol ar gyfer astudiaeth ôl-raddedig fel sydd ar lefel israddedig. Mae addysg uwch wedi cael ei datganoli i Lywodraeth Cymru ac maen nhw wedi penderfynu darparu lefel uwch o gymorth ariannol. Hefyd, mae Llywodraeth Cymru wedi rhoi cyllid i brifysgolion Cymru er mwyn iddynt gynnig gwerth £3,400 o gymorth nad oes rhaid ei ad-dalu i fyfyrwyr o Gymru sy’n astudio yng Nghymru. Yng Nghaerdydd, disgownt ar y ffi fydd hwn, bwrsariaeth fydd hi yn Abertawe ac mae prifysgolion eraill yng Nghymru yn ei reoli’n wahanol.

Bydd system Lloegr yn cymorthdalu myfyrwyr o’r UE a oedd yn arfer byw yn Lloegr, yn debyg i’w cyllid israddedig. Fel ar lefel israddedig, bydd myfyrwyr o’r UE a ddaeth i Gymru’n gymwys i gael y benthyciad Cymreig. Fel arfer mae prifysgolion yn cynnig ysgoloriaethau i fyfyrwyr rhyngwladol ar gyfer astudiaeth ôl-raddedig.

Mae benthyciadau Cymru a Lloegr yn cael eu talu’n uniongyrchol i fyfyrwyr, nid i’r brifysgol, felly bydd rhaid i chi dalu’r brifysgol yn uniongyrchol. Bydd eich benthyciad yn cael ei dalu i chi mewn tair rhan. Bydd rhaid talu’r ddau yn ôl fel 6% o’r hyn byddwch chi’n ei ennill dros £21,000, ond gan fod trothwy talu’r israddedigion newydd godi i £25,000, mae’n bosib y bydd hwn yn codi hefyd.

Cost Meistr yn y DU ar gyfartaledd yw tua £8,000, a gall rhai gostio llawer mwy, felly mae llawer o fyfyrwyr yn teimlo bod angen incwm ychwanegol arnynt i fyw. Mae Prifysgol Caerdydd yn cynnig Ysgoloriaeth Rhagoriaeth Meistr gystadleuol ar ffurf disgownt gwerth £3,000. Os ydych chi’n ystyried gwneud cais i astudio’n rhywle arall, ceisiwch ddarganfod a ydyn nhw’n cynnig cynllun ysgoloriaeth neu fwrsariaeth. Fel myfyrwyr Caerdydd, cewch y Canllaw Amgen i Gyllid Ôl-raddedig, sy’n rhestru sawl elusen a mudiad sy’n cynnig cyllid. Siaradwch ag Adran Gyngor ac Arian y Brifysgol i drafod pa fudd-daliadau gallech chi fod yn gymwys i’w cael.

Mae gweithio rhan amser i gael incwm ychwanegol yn fwy cyffredin ar lefel ôl-raddedig nag ar lefel israddedig.

Mae gweithio rhan amser i gael incwm ychwanegol yn fwy cyffredin ar lefel ôl-raddedig nag ar lefel israddedig. Mae Siop Swyddi Undeb y Myfyrwyr yn hysbysebu swyddi rhan amser ac achlysurol ledled Caerdydd ac mae gwasanaeth Gyrfaoedd y Brifysgol wedi bod yn ddefnyddiol i mi bob tro. Fel y gwnes i, mae’n bosib y byddwch chi’n penderfynu gwneud Meistr rhan amser dros ddwy flynedd fel y mae llawer o ôl-raddedigion yn ei wneud. Ces i lawer mwy o amser i weithio ac ennill arian ynghyd â fy ngradd drwy wneud hyn a bydd y ddwy flynedd yn dal i hedfan. Cofiwch y bydd hyn yn effeithio ar eich benthyciadau a’ch eithriad rhag treth cyngor.

Am fwy o gyngor ynglyn â sut mae fforddio Meistr, dwi’n argymell gwefannau FindAMasters a Targetpostgrad. Hefyd, cewch gysylltu â thîm Cyngor ac Arian y brifysgol, Cyngor i Fyfyrwyr Undeb y Myfyrwyr neu mae croeso i chi fy e-bostio i ar VPPostgraduate@cardiff.ac.uk. Pob lwc gyda’ch cam nesaf.
