Fridays For Future

Last Friday, four million people gathered in over 170 countries to join the movement #FridaysForFuture, and go on strike for the climate. In Cardiff, young people and adults peacefully protested in front of Cardiff Castle, the National Museum Cardiff, and the Senedd from 10:00-16:30; as many others did around the world.

The movement #FridaysForFuture was started by 16 year old Greta Thunberg, who decided to stop going to school to hold the Swedish government accountable for its action concerning climate change. Today, #FridaysForFuture is a global movement with representatives around the world connecting people to organise local climate strikes.

Climate Change

Cardiff University Students' Union declared a climate emergency in June 2019

With forests burning, and sea levels and temperatures rising across the world, climate change is a growing concern for everyone. In the past few years, various movements have grown – from Extinction Rebellion protests to associations lodging complaints against governments for climate inaction – to put pressure on governments and institutions to act in accordance to the crisis the world is currently facing.

The efforts of protesters are starting to bear fruit, as climate emergencies have been declared by institutions such as Bristol University and Cardiff University Students’ Union, and governments including the UK and Welsh governments.

Get involved

If you would like to help keep pressure on institutions and governments, then why not join one of the Cardiff University Students’ Union societies such as People and Planet, Extinction Rebellion, and the Ethical and Environmental Association. All these societies are currently actively recruiting students to help with their upcoming campaigns.

You could also join the local climate strikes, which are held on the same days as the global strikes. You can keep up to date on the Global Strikes website, or follow Cardiff Climate Strike event on Facebook, where the organiser group UK Student Climate Network will post the time and location of all protests.

Fridays For Future

Dydd Gwener diwethaf, fe ymgynullodd pedwar miliwn o bobl mewn dros 170 o wledydd i ymuno ymgyrch #FridaysForFuture, a mynd ar streic ar gyfer yr hinsawdd. Yng Nghaerdydd, fe brotestiodd pobl ifanc ac oedolion yn heddychlon o flaen Castell Caerdydd, Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd, a’r Senedd rhwng 10:00-16:30; fel y gwnaeth llawer mwy o amgylch y byd.

Mae’r mudiad #FridaysForFuture wedi dechrau gan Greta Thunberg, merch 16 oed, a benderfynodd beidio mynd i’r ysgol er mwyn gwneud llywodraeth Sweden yn atebol dros ei weithredoedd yn ymwneud a newid hinsawdd. Heddiw, mae #FridaysForFuture yn ymgyrch byd-eang gyda chynrychiolwyr o amgylch y byd yn dod â phobl ynghyd i drefnu streiciau hinsawdd lleol.

Newid Hinsawdd

Fe ddatganodd Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd argyfwng hinsawdd ym mis Mehefin 2019

Gyda choedwigoedd yn llosgi, a lefelau’r môr yn codi ar draws y byd, mae newid hinsawdd yn bryder cynyddol i bawb. Yn y blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae gwahanol fudiadau wedi tyfu - o brotestiadau Extinction Rebellion i gymdeithasau yn gwneud cwynion yn erbyn llywodraethau am ddiffyg gweithredu ar yr hinsawdd - i roi pwysau ar lywodraethau a sefydliadau i weithredu yn unol â’r argyfwng y mae’r byd yn ei wynebu ar hyn o bryd.

Mae ymdrechion y protestwyr yn dechrau llwyddo, wrth i argyfwng amgylcheddol gael ei ddatgan gan sefydliadau megis Prifysgol Bryste ac Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd, a llywodraethau gan gynnwys DU a Llywodraethau Cymru.
