Over 2,500 acres of gardens wind their way around a glorious silver lake, which is overshadowed by alluring rhododendrons and native species standing side by side. Lakeside you’ll find a secret grotto, at one with the landscape, offering postcard-like views over the estate. It is here, in the grounds of Stourhead, that Mr Darcey (Matthew Macfadyen) proposed to Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
Though known for the gardens, the magnificence of the house should not be understated. The house is an example of Palladian architecture, bringing an Italian flair Wiltshire’s rolling hills. The interior holds grand rooms, dressed floor-to-ceiling in rich paintings.
This is one of the National Trust’s most iconic estates and is not to be missed.
