CARDIFF UNIVERSITY WINDSURF CLUB
Any level or experience - we have equipment and events to suit you ALL!
We’re one of the fastest growing windsurf clubs in Wales, with the most legendary punch parties among the student windsurfing scene. We provide opportunities for all abilities, from regular beginner trips, pimping kit for intermediates and sick freestyle and wave events with other university pro's to help you nail that next trick with 10/10 steeze.
We are a relaxed, super sociable club who run regular socials from hard core fancy dress to chilled out pizza and movie evenings. Not to mention, being part of CUWC gives you exclusive access to Student Windsurfing Association events across the country - for details, see later.
Honestly, if don't have a 'clew' about anything remotely windsurfing- or if you've been sailing the tasty winds of Boracay since before you could walk- CUWC has something to offer you.
Interested? Get involved by Liking our Facebook Page and come and chat to us at the AU freshers fayre in the students union on 27th September!
We will also be running two give it a go sessions for you to wet your appetites (GIAG):
We're really looking forward to this season and even more excited to see your beautiful faces so come and speak to us and get involved
WHAT HAVE ON OFFER
Beginners: If you have never windsurfed before or have only tried it a few times then CUWC is perfect for you. Throughout the year, we will run Lake trips every other saturday (except for extenuating circumstances such as bad weather), we have wetsuits and windsurf kit available for you to use, and we have RYA qualified instructors within the club who provide teaching sessions. We promise, as soon as you wobble about on a board for the first time, you WILL be addicted and if you want to get competitive you beginner races will take place at the SWA events!
Intermediates: We have lots of opportunities for those who have some experience of windsurfing and mastered the basic techniques of steering, tacking and gybing. We have windsurfing equipment suitablefor those looking to get comfortable in the harness and start using foot straps (this includes mid-range boards and harnesses). Also, to help you progress, intermediates are encouraged to go on lake trips and attend SWA events, where more advanced windsurfers will provide advice to help you improve.
Experienced: The experienced windsurfers can make trips to the beach such as Newton/Porthcawl and also to the lake when the wind is up. We have some kit available for you if you don’t have your own including a few short boards and sails. There are some awesome wave spots within an hour drive from Cardiff, and of course, having a membership will give you access to the renowned wave events run by the Student Windsurfing Association!
Social: If you enjoy windsurfing but aren’t so keen on the cold/wet welsh weather, we have regular social events ! These includ the famous PUNCH PARTIES (wooo wooooo) with a mysterious punch recipe which guarantees you a crazy night every time; annual christmas and end of year meals; and we also hold non-alcoholic socials such a BBQ’s, playzone, indoor surfing, supping and movie nights.
STUDENT WINDSURFING ASSOCIATION EVENTS
The most exciting part of being a member of CUWC is being able to go to the EPIC SWA events at Universities across the UK. This includes Aussie Kiss at the start of the year, set up by a lake in Devon, followed by several core and wave events hosted by Universities accross the UK.
Events run over the weekend - we head down on the Friday night, grab some food and meet up with other universities for an evening in their local city for a (reasonably) quiet night out.
As your hangover passes, you will spend Saturday at the lake or beach for a full day of windsurfing (or relaxing by the waters edge). There will be FREE tuition for all levels, as well as freestyle and racing for ALL abilities (yes beginners, you get to show off your new-found skills). Get your best fancy dress lined up as on Saturday evening we will be let loose on the city for a great party with some ridiculous fancy dress themes and some hilarious costumes.
Again, Sunday will be spent on the water for more windsurfing fun and competitions, before making our way back to Cardiff for a well earned rest. Weekends like this not only improve your windsurfing skills, but they can earn you loads of jammy prizes (hopefully), create some great stories for the grandkids, and make you lifelong friends not only within our club, but with students from all over the UK (OK, we'll stop being soppy now).
Just to put the icing on the cake, SWA events only cost from £20 to £30, which includes the windsurfing, the food for breakfast and dinner for the whole weekend and the nights out! We also organise transportation to and from the event, and bring kit for you to use too! It's all inclusive really!
