Cardiff University's club for all abilities, from first setting to competing for Team Cardiff

We are a vibrant and welcoming community brought together by a common love of volleyball. Every year many new members of all ranges of past volleyball experience join the club. We offer a great chance to develop your sporting skills, improve your fitness, and make friends through regular trainings and all manner of socials. Volleyball becomes a lifelong hobby for many of our members as they continue playing around the world after graduation. Come along to any of our Thursday and Sunday sessions discussed below and try it for yourself!

Beginner to Intermediate Players

Trainings are Thursday 18:30 - 20:30 (beginner) and 20:30 - 22:30 (intermediate) and Sundays 16:00 - 18:00 (beginner and intermediate) at Talybont Sports centre. Expect fitness, drills, games and dedicated coaching by our Beginners' Coach and dedicated member of the club, Stefano. We hold several recreational tournaments each year and make weekend trips to a tournament in Warwick and Beach Volleyball Student Cup.

Teams Representing Cardiff University

Our Men's and Women's teams currently compete in the first division of BUCS, the main university league for most sports. Cardiff is currently in the top ten universities in the UK in this league. We also compete in Welsh League, which our Women's Team has won two years in a row and our Men's Team has also won most recently. Additionally, we compete in both the Indoor and Beach Student Cups. Last but not least we play Varsity versus our rivals Swansea University, which both our teams won this year.

Specialist team trainings for men and women are on Tuesdays, 18:30 - 20:30 in Talybont Sports Centre. Expect dedicated and intense training with highly experienced professional coaching. We hope to support the development of players and win for Team Cardiff. Team players have lots of fun together and also get to know all club members through mixed abilities training and socials.

Tryouts are held for teams at the start of each term, but players may also be invited to join after attending an intermediate training session (see above). Potential players are advised to keep Wednesdays as free as possible for travelling to away matches, but we would still love to have you if that's not possible. Players with national or international experience may be substantially supported by Cardiff University's High Performance Programme.

Socials

As well as the traditional nights out once a fortnight, Volleyball host all sorts of socials, varying from laser-tag to ice-skating to fancy dress events. We start the beginning of the year with Initiation - our version of a warm welcome to our freshers, and at the end of the year we say goodbye to our committee with Termination. We go away at least twice a year with our annual competition weekend at Warwick University and our end of year holiday for the volleyball beach cup! Find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the latest news and event updates. Non-members are always welcome as well!

Volleyball in wider Cardiff

Cardiff is an excellent place to play volleyball. It's home to several clubs and recently opened beach volleyball courts! Several of our members also play for other clubs in Cardiff such as Cardiff Celts and Cardiff Falcons.

Membership and Trying it Out

Membership for 2018 - 19 will be purchasable from mid-September. Non-members are welcome to two sessions per year, for £2 each time - payable online. We always welcome new members of all abilities throughout the year! Please attend an Open Session first (or tryouts at the start of term) and if experienced you may be invited to team training as well.

Membership includes all trainings, as well as competition fees and transport to weekly matches for team players. The only significant non-included costs are clothing and occasional weekends away. We are generously supported by Cardiff University Athletic Union to enable this. Buying kit is only mandatory for team members and costs £29.95, which lasts the whole of your time at university.

We mostly cater for university students but also welcome up to ten non-students each year.
