Cardiff Volleyball Club
We are a vibrant and welcoming community brought together by a common love of volleyball. Every year many new members of all ranges of past volleyball experience join the club. We offer a great chance to develop your sporting skills, improve your fitness, and make friends through regular trainings and all manner of socials. Volleyball becomes a lifelong hobby for many of our members as they continue playing around the world after graduation. Come along to Sunday beginner sessions discussed below and try it for yourself!
Beginner to Intermediate Players
We hold sessions to accomadate all levels at CUVC. Our Beginners sessions happening every sunday 16:00-17:00 and 17:00-18:00 are for If you have absolutly zero experience, don't even know what a 'Volleyball' is or have done the classic badminton net volleyball In PE then this is for you!
As well as this our more advance Intermediates sessions being held on every tuesday 07:00 - 09:30! These are for those of you that have had experience playing before coming to Uni but have never played an team or competitive volleyball. However the Intermediates are invite only so you must attend either trials at the start of the year or a beginners session first.
In addition to recruiting newcomers each year, the club is committed to develop in existing players to move into the representative teams. To promote this we run an annual St David's Day tournament where our developing player have the opportunity to play in a two day competition against other universities.
Teams Representing Cardiff University
Our Women's teams currently compete in divisions 1 and 2 of BUCS, the main university league for most sports. With our Men’s teams are competing in division 2. Additionally, we compete in both the Indoor and Beach Student Cups for which our Men's 1s cause 3rd in Indoor in 2023. Last but not least we play Varsity, versus our rivals Swansea University, which both our teams won this year.
Specialist team trainings for men’s firsts and women are on Tuesdays, 18:30 - 20:30 in Talybont Sports Centre. And our 2nd teams train on Thursday evenings with Women's 2s 18:00-20:00 and our Men's 2s training 20:00-22:00.Expect dedicated and intense training with highly experienced coaching. We hope to support the development of players and win for Team Cardiff. Team players have lots of fun together and also get to know all club members through mixed abilities training and socials.
Tryouts are held for teams at the start of each term, but players may also be invited to join after attending an intermediate training session (see above). Potential players are advised to keep Wednesdays as free as possible for travelling to away matches, but we would still love to have you if that's not possible. Players with national or international experience may be substantially supported by Cardiff University's High Performance Programme..
Last year also saw an exciting new development with the top players from Cardiff joining those from the other Welsh universities to form a Welsh Universities side to take on international student teams from Scotland and Ireland plus other representative teams in a tournament at the beginning of the Easter break.
Socials
As well as the weekly Wednesday socials at the Vulcan Lounge, Volleyball host all sorts of socials, varying from laser-tag to ice-skating to fancy dress events. We start the beginning of the year with a social to welcome to our freshers, and at the end of the year we all dress up in our fancy clothes and have a ball. We go away every year to the Deepdish beach volleyball tour to Portugal. Find us on Facebook, TikTok and Instagram for the latest news and event updates. Social members are always welcome as well!
We are so grateful to have the Vulcan Lounge as our official sponsor this year! We will be holding many of our socials there.
Volleyball in wider Cardiff
Cardiff is an excellent place to play volleyball. It's home to several clubs and also has amazing beach volleyball courts at one of the largest beach centres in the UK! Several of our members also play for other clubs in Cardiff such as Team South Wales and Cardiff Volleyball Club
