Love speed, competition, and good times? We’re Cardiff University’s home for all things motorsport — from competitive karting to F1 watchalongs and unforgettable socials.
GIVE IT A GO (GIAGs)
Whether you've gone karting before or never tried it, we will be holding karting taster sessions at the local TeamSport Cardiff track over the first few weeks. Your ticket incudes 2x 15-minute sessions, a safety briefing, tips on operating the kart and equipment (helmet and gloves). We recommend wearing something you can sweat in and trainers for your session. The committee will on hand at every session to get you started. We are planning to hold both a mixed and womens only sessions, to help encourage more female participation in a historically male dominated sport. GIAGs are a great opportunity to meet our committee and meet new friends. Tickets will be announced on the SU site, all social channels and on our WhatsApp community.
WHAT WE DO
You don't need to be into karting to join! We’ve got you covered with F1 watchalongs every race weekend during term time at a Cathays pub, and in the past we've watched MotoGP and WSBK too. On the social side, catch themed nights out, Wednesday pub trips followed by YOLO, and sober meetups occur throughout the year.
We represent the university in the BRITISH UNIVERSITY KARTING CHAMPIONSHIP (BUKC) racing against other unis across the UK. Anyone with our BUKC membership can take part in a test day to earn their BUKC licence — your ticket to racing for Cardiff some of the UK's top-class karting circuits. See the BUKC TEST DAY section for more info.
One of the best events of the year is the BUKC 24 hours in Teesside, usually held in June. This is open to all members on the standard membership, with no BUKC license required. We race a rental kart for 24hrs against other universities through the day, night, sun and usually rain. It's the more casual event on the BUKC calander, with Cardiff always bringing a theme to our team names.
For those who want to race more causally, we run our own Club Championship at circuits across the region (and sometimes further afield!). With several rounds planned across the academic year, each round is ticketed and usually in high demand. With multiple classes, epic battles on track, and an end-of-year awards ceremony, it’s the best of both worlds, with a bit competition but mostly for fun.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Do I need to have karting experience to join?
Absolutely not. Many of our previous members have joined us having never raced before. Many even go on to race at the BUKC for us. If you're a fan of motorsport or just want to try something new, that's all you need.
Do we have our own karting circuit and karts?
We get this question a lot. It would be amazing if we did, but unfortunately not. However, a lot of our members are also members of the local TeamSport track in Cardiff, which offers regular cheap karting sessions. Many of our members go separately from the club from time to time.
How do I get selected to race in the BUKC?
After purchasing our BUKC membership, you'll be notified about test days (usually in 1st semester or after Christmas). BUKC test day are for obtaining a license, proving to the organiser you are safe and above the minimum pace to drive. Once you have your licence you'll be in the pool of drivers available for selection on one of our teams. Having a good test day, showing up to our internal championship, having prior competitive karting experience and getting to know our community better are all ways you can improve your chances of getting selected.
I don't drink, will I still have fun at socials?
Absolutely. We have a great mix of members who do and don't drink, there is absolutely no pressure to drink. We'll be doing sober socials throughout the year if going out-out is not your thing.
