Pre-hospital and Emergency Medicine for Students (PEMS) is a medical student-led initiative that enables interested healthcare students to gain high-quality teaching in, and clinical exposure to, Emergency Medicine (EM). PEMS originated in Cardiff Univerisity in 2013, and a sister scheme arose in Swansea University in 2015.
We connect students and clinicians in order to provide opportunities for students to gain first-hand clinical experience and exposure to the acute setting. We achieve this by pairing interested students (our 'core members') with consultants in the University Hospital of Wales' emergency department (ED) so that students may attend out-of-hour shadow shifts with their allocated clinician. We intend that the student-clinician contacts established via this scheme will also provide opportunities for students to pursue self-organised research projects and SSCs in EM.
We are passionate about all things education in EM. Alongside our 'core member' scheme, we pride ourselves on running free, open-to-all, monthly teaching sessions on a variety of topics pertinent to the field. Our sessions often feature exciting guest speakers (previous speakers have included clinicians from the Wales Air Ambulance Charity and MEDSERVE Wales) and centre around small group, hands-on, peer-led teaching. We have previously presented at conferences such as the Welsh International Symposium on Emergency Medicine (WISEM) 2016, and even ran our own Pre-hospital and Emergency Medicine conference in June 2017. The latter was a great success, involving collaboration with some of Cardiff's other medical societies, talks from international guest speakers, and a poster competition. Our newest project aims to facilitate the creation of a wide range of student-made, clinician-reviewed e-learning materials, including podcasts, videos and infographics.
Whether you possess a burning passion for Pre-hospital/Emergency Medicine, or would simply like to learn more about these exciting areas of medicine, PEMS has something to offer you, so get involved today!
