Join the Give it a Go Team

The Give it a Go team is drawn from the most passionate and committed individuals, striving to contribute to and enhance the student experience. They have the dedication and skills to make decisions that help Give it a Go evolve. There's something for everyone, from desk-based work planning small events or researching overnight stays, to leading trips in some incredible places and taking part in events around campus.

This is a great opportunity to get involved with the Students' Union at a deeper level, open the door to further opportunities and will look fantastic on your CV!

The Give it a Go team have gone on to become wonderfully successful, with members becoming sabbatical officers, student trustees of the Students’ Union and SU presidents. The 2022-2024 president of NUS Wales was even on the team, so you’ll be following in great footsteps. An experience like this gives you a dynamic role to grow and develop as well as helping to enhance the student experience.

What are the roles?

We have a number of different roles, with varying degrees of commitment. These are divided into two parts: desk-based roles will involve taking responsibility for a key area of Give it a Go, such as socials or behind the scenes research. Then there are events and trips volunteers, who are going on the trips and running events. Or you could do both!

Trip & Events Team Members

•  This role will involve working in a small team (usually of 2) supporting Give it a Go trips and events. This will involve working with students, coach drivers, the small events coordinator and the Give it a Go Coordinator. It is mainly field based but you’ll be expected to come to a briefing and debriefing in the office with the Give it a Go Coordinator prior to/after the trip or event. We would encourage everyone who volunteers with Give it a Go to apply to be a trip and events team member, though this is not compulsary.

Small Events Team Leader (multiple roles avaliable)

• To plan and lead a programme of small events for Give it a Go. This may involve planning events directly and also overseeing & running pre-planned events such as bubble football and SU mini-golf. The successful candidates will take a lead on different events, briefing team members, liaising with full time staff and leading the pack-down and debriefing of activity. The role is based in the SU, partly in the office and partly running events. The role will be working closely with the Give it a Go Coordinator and team members.

Social Activities Officer

• The postholder will be responsible for providing a varied and interesting programme of events and activities for student volunteers, including meetings, social events (non-drinking and drinking) and occasional day trips. The role will be a mixture between being in the office and on socials events that they have arranged. The postholder will work closely with the Give it a Go Coordinator and team members.

Give it a Go Researcher

• This is a general role for one person, to assist all areas of Give it a Go. Research will vary but will often focus around overnight trips; finding quality hostels, attractions and writing itineraries. This role is mainly office based and will be working with the Give it a Go Coordinator. The researcher will need to be flexible and will be expected to support other team members where required.

What is the commitment?

Consider the commitment of being a Give it a Go volunteer to be similar to being a committee member. For roles with desk work, 2 hours a week is expected, either on the desk or at running events where required. For trip and event based roles, you’d be expected to volunteer on approximately 2-3 events a term. There will also be regular meetings and socials you’d be expected to attend. The commitment lasts from October to end the end of semester 2. There may be ad-hoc events in term 3 but there wouldn't be the same expectations as in the first two semesters.

What will you gain?

As well as a fantastic opportunity to get involved with us and the Students’ Union, gaining skills and experience you will also gain:
  • A place as an upstanding member of the Give it a Go family
  • A CV reference from the Students’ Union.
  • First Aid Training
  • Free leader places on Give it a Go Day Trips
  • Socials throughout the year
  • £10 lunch expenses for each excursion

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is this a paid position? A. This isn’t a paid role – you would, however, become an expert in the Students’ Union and have a much greater understanding of all the various paid opportunities from the SU through the year. You will also gain and develop a vast number of skills which will help boost your overall employability. Q. When are interviews? A. Interviews will be held between 9am - 5pm during the week, at a time that suits you. Q. How will desk shifts be allocated? A. We will talk to you when you have your timetable and find a slot that works for you every week. Q. Can I manage this commitment? A. Previous team members have had no problems managing the commitments. We ensure commitment reduces well before exams and large coursework deadlines. You should, however, be aware of committing to too many big projects, clubs, and societies at once. If you have any questions we’d love to hear from you, feel free to email Karl, our GIAG Coordinator at giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk. Thank you for your time – best of luck!
