Shwmae! My name is Angie and I am so excited to be your Vice President Postgraduate Students for the 22/23 academic year!

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I come from Peru and grew up between Italy and Spain, so I had the chance of experiencing education in different ways. However, I never heard about students’ voices taken into consideration for relevant decisions, which means that when I came to Cardiff University back in 2018 I was amazed! I was amazed by the lecturer-student interactions, by the Students’ Union, by the power held by student voices (did you know that the ASSL did not use to be 24h?), by the societies and sports clubs and the communities that were created around them.

The connections and friendships that I made during my first year were key and helped me to go through the pandemic and very difficult times, and overall enriched my student experience in a way that encouraged me to carry on with a master’s degree in Medical Engineering. This, however, is not always the case for Postgraduate students which is why I want to keep working towards strengthening the Postgrad community by running events and activities where students can meet and make real connections (that may last for life!). I also want the Postgrad community to feel supported and want to ensure that student voices are being heard and build the student experience that everyone deserves.

If you have any questions, issues, ideas, or just fancy a cup of tea and a chat about anything, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me, I’m looking forward to meeting you!

My priorities for this year include:
  • Reviewing the accessibility of the available learning and teaching resources to ensure that all students with disabilities have equal learning opportunities
  • Championing the rights of Postgraduate Research students who teach, following on from the long-standing lobbying efforts by former Vice Presidents
  • Strengthening the Postgraduate community by reforming the way Postgraduates are included, represented, and engaged as well as supporting Postgraduate societies and clubs
