We cannot and will not stand by as students’ rights to protest are under attack.
This week, the University will be going to court with the aim of stopping anyone without consent from “enter[ing]… upon the land [campus] for the purpose of protest”. This includes students and staff of the University and marks a concerning change to students’ rights on campus.
As an organisation with a proud history of student activism and protest we condemn the University’s blatant attempts to silence the voices of those they disagree with. Students and staff should be free to protest, stand up for what they believe in, and speak truth to power wherever it may be.
As your Officers, we believe it is both possible and essential to uphold the right to protest while also working constructively to minimise disruption to others. The University’s decision to pursue a court order, rather than engage with us or the wider student body, shuts down the chance to find a reasonable and practical way forward. Protest should be met with dialogue and fair process, not legal action.
This is an attack on all students’ rights to protest, and we must stand together to protect our freedom of speech and expression.

Ni allwn ac ni fyddwn yn sefyll o’r neilltu wrth i hawliau myfyrwyr i brotestio ddod dan ymosodiad.
Yr wythnos hon, bydd y Brifysgol yn mynd i'r llys â'r nod o atal unrhyw un heb ganiatâd rhag “mynd i mewn… i diroedd [y campws] at ddiben gwrthdystio”. Mae hyn yn cynnwys myfyrwyr a staff y Brifysgol, ac mae’n nodi newid pryderus i hawliau myfyrwyr ar y campws.
Fel mudiad sydd â hanes balch o weithredu a phrotestio gan fyfyrwyr, rydym yn condemnio ymdrechion amlwg y Brifysgol i dawelu lleisiau'r rhai y maent yn anghytuno â nhw. Dylai myfyrwyr a staff fod yn rhydd i brotestio, sefyll dros yr hyn maen nhw'n credu ynddo, a lleisio’r gwirionedd yn wyneb pŵer lle bynnag y bo.
Fel eich Swyddogion, credwn ei bod yn bosibl ac yn hanfodol cynnal yr hawl i brotestio tra hefyd yn gweithio'n adeiladol i leihau'r aflonyddwch i eraill. Mae penderfyniad y Brifysgol i geisio gorchymyn llys, yn hytrach nag ymgysylltu â ni na'r corff myfyrwyr ehangach, yn dileu'r cyfle i ddod o hyd i ffordd resymol ac ymarferol o symud ymlaen. Dylid ymateb i brotest gyda deialog a phroses deg, nid camau cyfreithiol.
Mae hwn yn ymosodiad ar hawliau pob myfyriwr i brotestio, a rhaid i ni sefyll gyda'n gilydd i amddiffyn ein rhyddid i lefaru a mynegi ein barn.
