Statement on lack of NHS jobs for graduates | Datganiad ar ddiffyg swyddi GIG i raddedigion

Cardiff Students’ Union is deeply concerned about the lack of HEIW-commissioned roles currently being made available to graduating healthcare students, and the uncertainty this is creating for those preparing to enter the workforce.

Many students accepted NHS Wales bursaries with the expectation that they would move into employment in Wales after graduation. However, we are now hearing from students who are being told there may not be enough positions available, despite attractive bursaries to enter the NHS workforce in Wales. This is causing significant stress and confusion for students who want to stay and contribute to the Welsh NHS but may instead be forced to look elsewhere for employment.

There is also ongoing uncertainty about bursary repayment obligations in situations where graduates are unable to secure appropriate roles in Wales. The guidance within the bursary policy remains unclear and students urgently need reassurance.

Joshua Tandy, Vice President Heath Park Campus says:

“Students have committed years of study to training for vital roles within NHS Wales, with the expectation that this is what the country needs. However, the current climate feels misleading and contradicts the message they received when they chose to begin their courses - that more healthcare workers were required. It is incredibly worrying for students to now be facing the possibility that there may not be jobs available to them in Wales after spending thousands of pounds and years of their time on their education.

We are already hearing from a range of healthcare students who are feeling anxious about their futures and unsure what their options are. We are calling on HEIW to urgently provide clear information about job availability and what this means for graduates’ bursary commitments.”

Cardiff Students’ Union is seeking further engagement with HEIW to press for clarity on workforce planning, employment opportunities, and support available to students who are unable to secure roles in Wales after graduation. These students are committed to building their careers in Wales and supporting the future of NHS services here, and they deserve transparency and certainty about what happens next.

Mae Undeb Myfyrwyr Caerdydd yn bryderus iawn ynghylch y diffyg swyddi a gomisiynir gan AaGIC sydd ar gael ar hyn o bryd i fyfyrwyr gofal iechyd sy'n graddio, a'r ansicrwydd y mae hyn yn ei greu i'r rhai sy'n paratoi i fynd i mewn i’r byd gwaith.

Derbyniodd llawer o fyfyrwyr fwrsariaethau GIG Cymru gyda'r disgwyliad y byddent yn symud ymlaen i gyflogaeth yng Nghymru ar ôl graddio. Fodd bynnag, rydym nawr yn clywed gan fyfyrwyr sy'n cael gwybod efallai na fydd digon o swyddi, er gwaethaf y bwrsariaethau deniadol i ymuno â gweithlu'r GIG yng Nghymru. Mae hyn yn achosi straen a dryswch sylweddol i fyfyrwyr sydd eisiau aros a chyfrannu at GIG Cymru ond a allai gael eu gorfodi i chwilio am gyflogaeth mewn mannau eraill.

Mae hefyd ansicrwydd parhaus ynghylch rhwymedigaethau ad-dalu bwrsariaeth mewn sefyllfaoedd lle nad yw graddedigion yn gallu sicrhau rolau priodol yng Nghymru. Mae'r canllawiau o fewn polisi’r fwrsariaeth yn parhau i fod yn aneglur ac mae angen sicrwydd ar frys ar fyfyrwyr.

Dywed Joshua Tandy, Is-lywydd Campws Parc y Mynydd Bychan:

“Mae myfyrwyr wedi ymrwymo blynyddoedd o astudio i hyfforddi ar gyfer rolau hanfodol o fewn GIG Cymru, gyda’r disgwyliad mai dyma sydd ei angen ar y wlad. Fodd bynnag, mae’r hinsawdd bresennol yn teimlo’n gamarweiniol ac yn gwrth-ddweud y neges a gawsant cyn dechrau eu cyrsiau – sef bod angen mwy o weithwyr gofal iechyd. Mae’n destun pryder mawr i fyfyrwyr fod bellach yn wynebu’r posibilrwydd na fydd swyddi ar gael iddynt yng Nghymru ar ôl gwario miloedd o bunnoedd a blynyddoedd o’u hamser ar eu haddysg.

Rydym yn barod yn clywed gan ystod o fyfyrwyr gofal iechyd sy’n teimlo’n bryderus am eu dyfodol ac yn ansicr ynghylch beth yw eu hopsiynau. Rydym yn galw ar AaGIC i ddarparu gwybodaeth glir ar frys am argaeledd swyddi a beth mae hyn yn ei olygu o ran ymrwymiadau bwrsariaeth graddedigion.”

Mae Undeb Myfyrwyr Caerdydd yn ceisio ymgysylltu ymhellach â AaGIC i bwyso am eglurder ar gynllunio'r gweithlu, cyfleoedd cyflogaeth, a'r cymorth sydd ar gael i fyfyrwyr sy'n methu â sicrhau rolau yng Nghymru ar ôl graddio. Mae'r myfyrwyr hyn wedi ymrwymo i adeiladu eu gyrfaoedd yng Nghymru a chefnogi dyfodol gwasanaethau'r GIG yma, ac maent yn haeddu tryloywder a sicrwydd ynghylch yr hyn sy'n digwydd nesaf.
