The first meeting of the Welsh Language Steering group took place on 31st July 2015. The group has been created to steer the direction of Welsh language provisions within, and offered by, the Students’ Union.
Who sits on the Steering Group?
The new Welsh Language Steering Group is made up of Elected Officers, the Welsh Language Officer, student representatives, and Union and University staff. The group is chaired by Gethin Lewis who is the University’s nominated trustee on the Cardiff University Students’ Union Board of Trustees and a fluent Welsh language speaker.
The group is made up of both Welsh language and English language speakers. The meeting was conducted in both languages with simultaneous translation provided for non- Welsh language speakers in the room.
What did the Steering Group discuss?
The first meeting of the steering group was extremely productive. As well as agreeing terms of reference for the group, discussions revolved around topics such as the formulation of the new Welsh Language Policy, issues with third party Welsh language merchandise stock, the new Welsh for All language programme, translation services and the Inter-Collegiate Eisteddfod in 2016. The group also discussed the representation, structures and provision (social and political) for Welsh language speakers and learners at the Students’ Union.
It was agreed that smaller groups would be created to further develop the Welsh Language Policy and to look at the progression of a Welsh Language Executive Committee.
