As an International student, I know the struggle of finding the best storage solution over the summer. When you move out of halls at the end of term, you want a safe and reasonably priced storage solution so you can collect your things in the same state you left them.
There are a range of storage options in Cardiff which suit different needs. I will share just a couple of the different options along with any discounts they offer for students and their distance from the Students’ Union to use as a guide.
Collection and Drop Off
For those who would rather just pack up their boxes, a collection service may be the best for you.
The Box Co. will collect your things from your current address and drop them off at your new student home. To get a quote, all you need to do is fill out their survey and they will get you sorted. They offer a 40% off discount if your belongings are stored for at least 3 months.
Lovespace will send you boxes to pack your things in, collect them, and ship them to your new address! You can go to the website to get a quote, but they advertise prices as low as £69 / month (and £3.25 per box).
You’ve heard of easyJet, but have you heard of easyStorage? They are the perfect hybrid between the collection and self-storage model because they do both! easyStorage’s location at Rhymney River Bridge Rd. is a 14-minute drive away from the Students’ Union. They charge from £10.50 / week for the self-storage model, and you can hire movers for an extra charge! For collection, you can get as many boxes as you need, but they advertise the by-box price as £1.73 / week. For students they offer £30 off collection and 50% off storage for the first 3 months.
Storage Lockers
For those looking to share a storage unit with their friends, a traditional storage locker is the way. The benefit of this is that you can phase your move in over a couple of days, since you can collect your things anytime the location is open.
Pink Storage is just an 8-minute drive away from the SU to their Bay Close location and 13 minutes to the one on Newport Rd. They offer a variety of locker sizes and a student discount of 50% off for the first 8 weeks. The Pink branding is also an extra plus (like minds, eh?).
Safestore is a big name in the Cardiff storage conversation. They offer 50% off for up to 8 weeks of storage for new customers. They also make it very easy to share a locker with your friends or future housemates to save on costs. The Davis St. location is only an 8-minute drive away from the Students’ Union while the one on Newport Rd. takes 12 minutes.
Finally, we have another monster in the storage game: Storage Giant. They are veterans to the game, and it is relatively simple to split a unit with your buds. They are just down the road from Safestore on Newport Rd. so it is just a 15-minute drive from the Students’ Union. They do special holiday storage rates for books, electronics, and sports equipment for those who don’t want to transfer those bulky and heavy items home every year. While Storage Giant doesn’t advertise a student discount, they will beat any written quote you have from a different company by 15%. That’s a competitive spirit!
Now these are far from the only options for storage in Cardiff, but I thought going through a couple of options would help anyone looking for something that fits their needs. Remember when you’re moving out, to leave plenty of time and double check the closing times of the option you chose. I wish everyone the best of luck when it comes to moving season!
