Karate GIAG - Kumite Sparring

Sat 10 October 2026 14:00-15:00

Y Stiwdio, 1st Floor of Students' Union

At Cardiff University Karate Club, we train WKF (World Karate Federation) style point sparring, where the emphasis is on speed, timing, control and technique. Only light contact is permitted, making sparring both safe and accessible for all experience levels.

During the session, you'll:

  • Spar with partners of a similar experience level and ability, ensuring everyone gets challenging but appropriate matches.

  • Take part in practice matches with refereeing, giving you a realistic insight into how karate competitions are run.

  • Learn the rules, scoring system and etiquette of WKF kumite, so no previous experience of WKF sparring is required.

  • Receive feedback from coaches and training partners, allowing you to learn from each match, build confidence and try new techniques in a supportive setting.

This session is particularly valuable for anyone interested in competing in kumite, whether that's at Varsity, BUCS or other competitions. Regular match practice is one of the best ways to improve your decision-making, timing and tactical awareness, helping you identify areas to work on and gain confidence under competition conditions. Experienced competitors are equally welcome, with the opportunity to get quality sparring rounds and prepare for upcoming events.

What to bring:

  • Comfortable sports clothing you can move freely in (or a gi if you already have one!)

  • A bottle of water

  • A gum shield (if possible)

  • Your sparring equipment if you have it (mitts, foot guards and shin pads)

Don't have any sparring equipment yet? No problem! We have some club equipment available to borrow, so you can still take part.

Whether you're preparing for your first competition or looking to gain more experience on the tatami, this session is the perfect place to develop your sparring in a friendly and encouraging environment.
