Karate GIAG - Kumite Drills & Fitness

Tue 06 October 2026 18:30-19:30

Y Stiwdio, 1st Floor of Students' Union

Tickets

£3.00 (General)

Kumite is the Japanese word for sparring. At Cardiff University Karate Club, we train WKF (World Karate Federation) style point sparring, which focuses on speed, timing, control and technique rather than power. Only light contact is permitted, so there's no need to worry about getting hit hard—our sessions are designed to help you build confidence while learning in a controlled environment.

During the session you can expect:

  • Partner drills – practising attacking and defensive combinations with a partner to develop timing, movement and reactions.

  • Pad work – improving speed, accuracy and technique using focus pads and kick shields.

  • Fitness training – including circuits, conditioning exercises, agility drills and the occasional beep test to improve the fitness needed for sparring.

Our Kumite Drills & Fitness sessions cater to all experience levels and abilities. Whether you're trying sparring for the very first time, looking to build confidence before competing, or you're an experienced kumite competitor wanting to sharpen your skills and maintain your fitness, you'll find training partners and coaching suited to your level.

It's also a fantastic way to improve your fitness, develop your speed and reactions, challenge yourself and make new friends in a welcoming club environment.

What to bring:

  • Comfortable sports clothing you can move freely in (or a gi if you already have one!)

  • A bottle of water

Whether you're hoping to compete in the future or simply want to experience the exciting sporting side of karate, come along and give kumite a go—we'd love to welcome you to Cardiff University Karate Club!

Tickets are on sale now! Your ticket gives you access to both sessions on Tuesday 6th October and Saturday 10th October, so you can attend on either or both dates.

If you'd also like to try our Traditional Karate & Kata sessions, be sure to purchase a Traditional Karate & Kata Give It A Go ticket as well.
