Event Information
🧫Creating Microbial Art!🧫
Come and practice your aseptic technique through making microbial art in the lab with us!
Members: Free
Non-members: £2
This is something very exciting the society has been planning since we began at the start of this semester. We wanted to create the oppportunity to practise your lab skills, while also doing something a little more unusual than your typical practical.
Unfortunately, the event is only for BIOSI and Medpharm studeents. This is because these are students that have been trained in aseptic technique in year 1. Student IDs will be checked on the door.
Viewing Session: Thursday 23rd April 10am-12pm C2.05
What will the session look like?
Attendees will be provided an agar plate, a selection of micro-organisms to "draw" with (roughly 3 different species), and equipment to carry out the session aseptically. We additionally hope to have:
- Some GFP-producing micro-organisms
- A environmental sample, we will make a plate or two, to see what grows
Because we are working with micro-organisms, please bring design ideas or inspiration on paper. This is really important as we don't want people's phones being contaminated. As well as "drawings", there is also room for letting the micro-organisms do there thing. There is quite a bit of beauty in the forms and shapes they naturally create too.
The morning and afternoon sessions will be the same, so please choose which ever best fits with your time table.
There will also be a seminar-like session on antimicrobial resistance and sustainablity at 1pm, which should last roughly 40 minutes. It will be a great time for discussion and learning.
