Model United Nations Society

Who are we?

We are the Cardiff model United nations society (MUN) a society dedicated to politics, debate and roleplay within the framework and model of the United Nations. This sees sessions of debate on presented topics where nations delegates will step forth to speak in front of the UN to present their opinions and arguments on a topic.

We aim to provide a safe and fun space to have political discussion in which all speakers are equal and given plenty of opportunities to fully express their views and opinions. While nations are expected to express extreme ideologies or aggressive rhetoric all must be done in line with not only UN guidelines but also within the university codes of conduct.

What we do?

Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations, that aims to educate participants about international law, cooperation, and multilateral diplomacy. In Model United Nations, students take on the roles of diplomats representing states and participate in a session of debate regarding international disputes aiming to create a binding resolution. Participants need to research their countries' position, debate, deliberate, consult, and eventually develop a new UN framework with solutions to world problems.

Within the semesters we will host special crisis sessions which see a mix up of compared to regular sessions. Crisis sessions are comprised of a few delegates representing a whole nation trying to navigate a political or military crisis. Sessions often take up several hours and see the world being remade and rewards are handed out at the end to the best delegates

After regular sessions the group will go out and socialise often in nearby pubs to relax and unwind. Any and all delegates are welcome to join to get to know each other or the committee better.

When/where we do it?

Sessions are hosted every week on Mondays from 7:00-9:00 in the evening. Sessions are hosted in JP 2.01 but this may change so keep an eye on the socials for any updates

Why should you join?

The sessions are casual and fun for anyone depending on your fancy. You could pick a major nation and jump into the heat of debate, or you could take a more relaxed approach only speaking when you feel like it and watching from the sidelines. There is no requirement to talk or remain actively involved so delegates can sit back and watch.

MUN is a combination of debate and politics, so it is a great space to develop your public speaking skills and confidence. Similarly, it is nonstop politics during the sessions and especially after, so it is great to expand your knowledge and opinions on the current politics. These skills can be stand out on a resume or CV.

We hope to see you at the next session
