Cardiff University Rare Diseases and Genetics Society

Rare and genetic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, yet many remain poorly understood, under diagnosed and underrepresented.

Whether you are studying medicine, genetics, biomedical sciences, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, healthcare, or something completely different, everyone is welcome.

Our society will explore rare and genetic disease from a range of perspectives — from the science and genetics behind these conditions, to their diagnosis and clinical management, the latest research and the lived experiences of patients and families.

What will we do?

Throughout the academic year, we aim to organise a variety of activities, including:

🧬 Monthly educational talks from clinicians, geneticists, researchers and other healthcare professionals

🔬 Regular research-focused events exploring genetics, genomics, emerging treatments, precision medicine and current rare disease research

🗣️ Patient and family perspectives, giving members the opportunity to hear directly from people living with rare diseases and understand the realities beyond the textbook

📢 Awareness campaigns, including activities around Rare Disease Day and other relevant awareness events

🤝 Networking opportunities with clinicians, researchers, charities, patient organisations and other students with an interest in the field

Why join?

Learn beyond the curriculum - explore topics that may not receive much attention, from genomic medicine and gene therapy to the diagnostic journey

Discover research and career paths - have opportunities to meet people working in these areas and learn about potential careers, research prospects and experiences

Develop a holistic perspective - incorporating human voices into our activities, we hope to encourage members to consider rare disease from a perspective that goes beyond diagnosis

Meet like-minded people - the society will bring together students from different courses and years who share an interest in rare and genetic diseases. You don't need to be an expert — curiosity is enough

Get involved

There will be opportunities for members to present or promote their research or specialist interest at regular events run throughout the year. For those interested in taking on more responsibility, there will also be opportunities to join the committee in future years!

Who can join?

Everyone - You do not need to study medicine!!!!

Whether you have an academic interest, are considering a career in research or healthcare, have a personal connection to rare and genetic conditions, or simply want to learn more, you are welcome!

We hope to build relationships with Cardiff University researchers, healthcare professionals, rare-disease charities and patient organisations, while creating opportunities for students to learn, collaborate and contribute to raising awareness of rare and genetic diseases. 🧬
