Black & Minority Ethnics Association

Black & Minority Ethnics Association

The Black and Ethnic Minority Association (BEMA) is an organisation of Cardiff University students who identify as an ethnic minority individual in Cardiff, Wales.

It is against the law to disadvantage or discriminate against an individual on the basis of their race, colour, and nationality (including citizenship) ethnic or national origins.

As a student who identifies as an ethnic minority, you will most likely fall within a group of individuals termed to have ‘protected characteristics’ and as such, you are protected from unlawful discrimination on the basis of your race under the Equality Act 2010.

BEMA recognises every student’s right to an education free of discrimination or disadvantage and will work this year to lobby and campaign against procedures, policies or cultures that perpetuate indirect or direct discrimination. BEMA will provide a forum for constructive discussion around race whilst studying in Cardiff University and countless opportunities for you to feedback on your Higher Education experience here at Cardiff University.

We also recognise the need to alleviate the negative pressures on your career progression that are associated with the Black Attainment Gap and its multiple facets. So, BEMA will work towards providing you with opportunities to diversify your CV, enhance your professional network and help you develop a myriad of skills.

Our aims:

  • Increase Visibility of ethnic minority students
  • Increase Empathy towards ethnic minority students and their lived experiences
  • Increase Dialogue between ethnic minority students and the University as a whole

If you are interested in volunteering to support the work of BEMA, undertaking positions of leadership and responsibility, want an opportunity to contribute creative ideas to promote and drive change, please get in touch with your BME Officer at BMEOfficer@Cardiff.ac.uk

Membership of BEMA is free and we look forward to meeting you.
