What is the volunteering role?

What are the aims of this organisation/role?

The aim of the Community Champion role is to help raise awareness of kidney disease and the work of Popham Kidney Support (PKS) within local communities across Cardiff. By spreading the word and connecting people to our vital support services, Community Champions play a key part in improving the lives of children, young people, and adults living with kidney disease. Whether it's giving a talk, sharing leaflets, or organising local events, you’ll be helping to make sure no one faces kidney disease alone.

What can volunteers expect to gain?

Becoming a Community Champion is a rewarding opportunity for students to grow personally and professionally, while making a real difference in the lives of people affected by kidney disease. As a volunteer, you’ll benefit from: A supportive community – connect with like-minded individuals and be part of a close-knit volunteer network Training and resources – receive initial training and access to further learning opportunities in communication and awareness-raising Practical experience – gain valuable work experience, build confidence, and develop a range of transferable skills Ongoing support – you’ll have a dedicated PKS contact guiding you through your journey, with regular check-ins and open communication Networking opportunities – engage with other Community Champions through meetups and a closed Facebook group Insight into the charity sector – learn more about the work PKS does, its services, and how fundraising and awareness can change lives Personal fulfilment – know that your efforts are directly helping to support families in Wales facing kidney disease

What skills and abilities do I need to take on this role?

Anyone with a passion for raising awareness of kidney disease and Popham Kidney Support in their local area.

Where is this opportunity based?

This is a community-based and flexible role, meaning students can volunteer in their own local area in Cardiff. Most activities can be carried out in your university or local community, and many can also be done remotely or alongside your studies. You won’t need to travel to a central office, but if any in-person meetings or training sessions are arranged, they’ll be communicated well in advance—and we’ll always try to find a location that’s convenient for you. If you do need to travel for a specific event or activity, we’ll provide guidance and may be able to reimburse reasonable travel expenses. You’ll also have ongoing support from the PKS team via email, phone, and virtual meetings, so wherever you’re based, we’ll be there to help!
