Neglected Tropical Diseases

SU 4A/B • Thu 21 February 2019 18:00-20:00

1 BILLION people are affected by neglected tropical diseases. This group of over 20 infectious diseases affect some of the world’s poorest populations but are often overlooked because they are not profitable to treat or research.

Professor Andrew D Westwell is the Dean of Research and Innovation at Cardiff University and works at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. His research mainly focuses on the discovery of new anti-cancer treatments. In July 2018, he led a team of researchers to successfully create a drug compound from the goji berry plant which can treat schistosomiasis and fascioliasis, two deadly neglected tropical diseases which affects over 600 million people.

Come along to this session to learn more about neglected tropical diseases as well as about Prof Westwell’s research – free refreshments will be provided and there will be a short Q&A after, not to be missed!
