Abu-Bakr Madden Al-Shabazz will explore the history of Cardiff through the lens of black labour and reveal how community relations have defined and steered modern Cardiff. A pop-up exhibition of items from the vast collections of Cardiff University’s Special Collections and Archives will also be on display - many for the first time.

Abu-Bakr (Dip, BSC (Hons), PTLLS, PGCE/PCET is a multidisciplinary subject expert within the teaching & learning profession. He has taught and lectured at numerous universities including Cardiff in subjects from Ancient African Civilisations to Multiculturalism for over 26 years. Abu-Bakr ran his own Black and African history studies programme at the Cardiff University Centre for Lifelong Learning for 9 years including subjects in: Multicultural Britain, African-Caribbean History, Rise and Fall of the Moorish Islamic Empire, The Civil Rights Movement, Colonialism in Africa and the Caribbean, Race and Genetic Science all as degree modules.

In 2012; where he was nominated for the Students Enrichment Award for raising the academic standards of SEN undergraduate students in their dissertation presentations at their annual conference. In the same year, he was interviewed by the TV Jamaica series called ‘Land of Legends’ where he was acknowledged for his Black and African history modules and the first Jamaican to have reached such a position in a Welsh University. He also appeared on Radio 5 Live with the then, Jamaican Minister, to debate Jamaica’s 50th Year of Independence on how the Island has progressed since 1962.

As a historian and educator, he was featured in a documentary school resource called ‘Wales Untold’ as a training tool to help teachers in Wales – blend Black/African historical studies within the Welsh Curriculum. Abu-Bakr is the Director for Acap Academy C.I.C., providing education and training programmes including: Race & Ethnic Diversity Training.

In this talk, he will refer to the Wales Untold Project and explore the history of Wales through the lense of black labour and how community relations and labour relations have defined and created the nation. The talk will be followed by a tour of a collection of pictures and documents to complement the subject area provided by Cardiff University's Special Collections.
