What is a Student Academic Representative?

Cardiff Students' Union and Cardiff University work in partnership to ensure that the student voice is heard and taken seriously at every level. Student Academic Representatives play a vital role in this by attending their Student-Staff Panels within their School, and acting as a link between members of staff and their fellow students.

This role is a hugely important and very rewarding one. Whether you decide to become a Representative or if you just want to find out who your Representative is, we're here to help.

Become a Rep

How do I become a Student Academic Representative?

To ensure fairness, Student Academic Representatives are democratically elected by their peers. These elections normally take place in the first few weeks of term; your School will explain how the elections work and this may involve online voting.  If you're interested in become a Rep but haven't received any information about how to go about doing so, e-mail us at StudentReps@cardiff.ac.uk and we will find out when elections are taking place within your School. Feel free to come and see the Education and University Affairs Officer, Beth Button, on the 3rd floor of the Students' Union for further advice on elections.

What's in it for me?

As a student, you're investing more than ever into your education, so why not become a Student Academic Representative and ensure that your course is running as smoothly as possible? We have dedicated members of staff within the University and the Students' Union to support you, as well as services such as conferences, guidance and extensive training. Besides being confident that there is a framework in place to assist you in being a great Student Academic Rep, your role will enable you to ensure course satisfaction for your peers, gain a wide range of invaluable transferable skills, not to mention meeting lots of new people along the way.

Use your Rep

What type of issues does a Student Academic Rep deal with?

Your Student Academic Representative can feed back any positive or negative comments you may have about your School, subject or module through attending Student-Staff Panels; these occur on average once a semester. As a result of being trained to signpost students to the relevant people, Student Academic Reps are also great sources of information regarding the various services Cardiff University and the Students' Union has to offer.

How do I contact my Student Academic Representative?

If you have feedback on your course and want your representative to voice these views in a Student-Staff Panel, or if you have a question to ask them, then there are number of ways for you to find out who they are and how best to contact them. Your representative should do at least one shout-out in a lecture per semester, and will also send out e-mails encouraging comments and engagement. Failing that, a list of your representatives is available here. If you're still unable to find out who to contact, e-mail us at StudentReps@cardiff.ac.uk and we'll point you in the right direction.
