On the 18th of December, the British Medical Association (BMA) announced industrial action, following a ballot in which 98% of participating junior doctors voted in favour.
There will be a full 72-hour walkout from the 15th of January, with significant impact expected across Wales. This is part of a fight for full pay restoration, pushing back against pay erosion over a significant number of years.
The Students’ Union has a strong history of supporting industrial action in the best interests of Cardiff University students. I believe this walkout is in the best interests of students – this fight directly impacts medical students in Cardiff both as future NHS doctors and healthcare students embedded in the sector.
The School of Medicine have instructed most students not to attend their clinical placements during the walkout period, to ensure that no students are required to cross a picket line and that students are not asked to perform skills outside their competency level. However, some students in unaffected primary care placements may still be expected to attend – please make sure you check communication from the school to be sure.
While I support this walkout and the school’s decision to put placements on hold, I understand concerns that it may impact students’ education. Ar y 18fed o Ragfyr, cyhoeddodd Cymdeithas Feddygol Prydain (BMA) gweithredu diwydiannol, yn dilyn pleidlais lle gwnaeth 98% o’r meddygon iau a gymerodd rhan pleidleisio o blaid.
Bydd streic 72 awr yn dechrau ar y 15fed o Ionawr, gyda disgwyl effaith sylweddol ar draws Cymru. Mae hyn yn rhan o frwydr i adfer cyflog llawn, gan wthio’n ôl yn erbyn erydiad cyflog blynyddoedd diweddar.
Mae gan Undeb y Myfyrwyr hanes cryf o gefnogi gweithredu diwydiannol sydd er budd i fyfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd. Credaf fod y streic yma o fudd i fyfyrwyr – mae’r frwydr yma’n effeithio’n uniongyrchol ar fyfyrwyr meddygol yng Nghaerdydd fel meddygon y GIG yn y dyfodol ac fel myfyrwyr gofal iechyd yn y sector presennol.
Mae’r Ysgol Meddygaeth wedi rhoi cyfarwyddiadau i’r rhan fwyaf o fyfyrwyr peidio mynychu eu lleoliadau clinigol yn ystod y cyfnod yma, er mwyn sicrhau nad oes rhaid i unrhyw fyfyriwr groesi’r llinell biced ac fel nad yw myfyrwyr yn cael eu gofyn i berfformio sgiliau tu allan i’w gallu neu gymhwysedd. Er hyn, efallai y bydd disgwyl i rai myfyrwyr mewn lleoliadau gofal sylfaenol parhau i fynychu – gwnewch yn siŵr eich bod yn gwirio unrhyw ohebiaeth gan yr ysgol.
Tra fy mod yn cefnogi’r gweithredu diwydiannol yma a phenderfyniad yr ysgol i oedi lleoliadau, rydw i’n deall pryderon y gall effeithio ar addysg myfyrwyr. Os oes gennych unrhyw bryderon am effaith hyn ar eich addysg, cysylltwch â’r tîm Cyngor i Fyfyrwyr ar gyfer cyngor diduedd am ddim.
