I’m Lamorna, I’m 22 and I’ve just graduated in French and German. I grew up in Hertforshire, just north of London and I attended The Hemel Hempstead School where I did A Levels in French, German and Geography.
During my time at Cardiff, I was involved in several societies, attending events run by Baking Society, French Society, German Society, Erasmus Society, A Cappella, TCUPS, and Blank Verse. I was the treasurer (and often acting President) of German Society in my second year, organising a successful trip to Berlin as well as several smaller events, and in my final year was President after restarting the society due to it folding the year before. I have always been very active in the City of Cardiff Concert Band in which I play the flute, and I was Social Secretary in my final year, organising a music tour to Barcelona.
I decided to run for VP Societies in the Elections in 2017 because I feel passionately about societies and want everybody to benefit from them like I have – if it wasn’t for societies, my university life would have been totally different and I wouldn’t have found my best friends! During campaign week I was Lamorna “Captain Hook”-er, a pirate with a heart! I began my term in office in June 2017.
My priorities for the year are:
- Increasing support for course-based societies and encouraging them to join with their schools to offer collaborative events.
- Lobby the university to develop the Great Hall into more Society-friendly spaces – more bookable rooms.
- Put on more showcase events for societies to have more opportunities to show what they can do.
- Improve the handover process between committees by producing handover guidelines.
