Shwmae! I’m Henri, your VP Societies and Volunteering. I’m 21, and recently graduated with a degree in Politics and Philosophy, but I spent more of my university life getting involved in Union activities than studying!
I mostly grew up in a tiny village in rural Wiltshire, where I went to an equally tiny all-girls school called St Mary’s Calne (think Mallory Towers meets St Trinian’s). I took A-Levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry… and Theatre Studies. I stumbled into my place at Cardiff Uni through clearing, and now I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.
While at Uni here I’ve thrown myself into all sorts of things – I’ve been a member of ten different societies across my three years, with a heavy involvement in Performance and Artistic Societies, leading to my election to the Societies Exec. In my last academic year, I volunteered with the Student Advice department, which massively increased my knowledge and involvement in the Union, and fuelled my passion for developing and upholding the student experience. This contact with real students and their problems inspired me, along with a few of my fellow volunteers, to set up a new Student Led Service called Housing Action.
Election week was wild, you might have caught me running about on my ‘Hen Party’ campaign with a rainbow chicken tucked under my arm, chatting to as many students as possible. I really enjoyed hearing everyone’s thoughts and ideas, and would love that to continue that throughout my year in office – come and talk to me!
My priorities for the year are:
- Make societies and volunteering projects more visible and accessible so as many students as possible can get involved, both at the freshers fairs and throughout their time at Cardiff.
- Make sure everyone is recognised for the hours of hard work they put into their activities.
- Ensure that Committees are well trained and properly equipped for the challenges they face when running a society or project, and that the tier system provides them with an effective structure to achieve their potential.
