About My Role
James works as a direct liaison between the Union and the University on all non-academic issues in the best interests of students and represents your welfare needs to the University.
About Me
Shwmae pawb! I’m Jam, your Vice-President Welfare and Campaigns!
I grew up in Southampton, where I discovered my passion for languages. This took me to Winchester for my A-Levels where I studied Maths, Spanish, and Italian. At degree level, I knew I wanted a vibrant city full of opportunity and my search brought me to Cardiff University, with their BA in Translation sealing the deal.
During my time at CUSU, I’ve been involved with the Welcome Team, Student Lead Services, Societies, Sports Clubs, and Executive Committees. I decided to run for election when I saw how much these groups can come together and fight for rights and change.
Due to my own experiences and that of my friends, my focus has always been on mental health and I have campaigned, sought additional training, and been the first point of contact for those in need. However, I am so excited to go forward and represent our students on all welfare issues and campaign for them too.
Keep an eye out for the next #WarehamWin 🙂
My main priorities for the year include:
- Making your university experience more accessible: tackling dyslexia tests, improving disabled access, producing a new international student welcome guide, and making events more inclusive
- Early mental health intervention: introducing therapy animals, improving Union-University communication and fighting for a revolutionised personal tutor system
- Campaign and engage: ensure safety on campus through student training, improve awareness of the Disclosure Response Team and run impactful campaigns across all of the University!
