The University College Union (UCU) has announced its members will take industrial action on the 25 and 26 May. The industrial action involves a two day strike plus on-going Action Short of a Strike (ASOS). This does not mean all University staff are taking industrial action. We estimate that the overall numbers of staff taking industrial action will be extremely small.
It’s important to stress that it’s business as usual, all of your examinations will go ahead, as planned and University services will continue to be available. The University is taking every effort to ensure the strikes do not impact on students. Why are University staff striking?
The dispute is a national dispute over pay.
The industrial action applies to other UK universities, not just Cardiff University.
Will the University remain open?
Yes, the University will remain open during this time and students will have access to services. We estimate that you will notice little, if any, disruption.
How will I be affected?
The University has made every effort to ensure that the proposed strike action will have a minimal impact on students, and that the services offered across the University will remain unaffected.
Will exams be cancelled as a result of the strike?
No. Exams will proceed as scheduled.
I have coursework to submit on this date. Will the deadline be extended?
No. Submission deadlines will remain in place.
What if I need to speak to a member of staff/tutor/lecturer during this time?
All Schools are aware of the proposed strikes and will make extra provisions to ensure that students have access to specific expertise within the School.
Will the proposed strikes affect the marking of my exam papers?
The University will do everything it can to ensure that the marking of papers by staff is unaffected during this period. In the event of disruption, the University will endeavour to make extra resources available on a school-by-school basis.
When will I receive my grades?
Whilst we cannot guarantee that all grades will be returned on time, the University will make every effort to ensure that students receive their grades on the designated dates set by their School.
Will I still be able to graduate this year?
Yes. The proposed strikes should have no impact on this year’s graduation
