We’re excited to announce that Cardiff University Students’ Union has been shortlisted in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2019.

As well as being shortlisted for the Students’ Union award, we are extremely proud of our Cardiff Volunteering ‘Make a Smile’ project who have been shortlisted in the Giving Back category.

Introducing Make a Smile

The Make a Smile project believes that all children deserve a childhood and understands that illness or disability can make this very difficult for some. Their goal is to help these children to enjoy their childhood. They make appearances at a wide range of events including hospital visits and community fundraisers dressed as popular children’s characters. Fun is their number one priority for both children and volunteers; they seek to take children’s minds away from their current issues, and through the medium of play and fun, allow them to enjoy themselves as children.

Make a Smile was launched in 2017 by Cardiff University student, Luke Morgan. As a medical student, Luke was exposed to children who were undergoing hardships with illness or disability and wanted to make a difference.

There’s no greater feeling than walking into a room and having a child’s face light up when they see their idol, as they coming running across the room to greet you.

Luke is still leading the project and feels the rewards gained from volunteering are huge. “There’s no greater feeling than walking into a room and having a child’s face light up when they see their idol, as they coming running across the room to greet you. It’s not uncommon for a superhero or a princess to be followed around the room by a group of awestruck children. My favourite memory is that of a young girl who adored Tinkerbell so while I was Peter Pan, spent the whole day listing off why Tinkerbell was so amazing. Her passion, excitement and enthusiasm will stay with me, as I hope the visit will stay with her.

A big impact

The Make a Smile project is now approaching its 2nd anniversary and has brought smiles to over 6,000 children over the course of 2,000 hours of volunteering. They have more than 200 passionate volunteers that have dedicated these hours alongside their studies.

Looking to the future, the project is currently working on expanding to include appearances at events and visits for older people, with visits to elderly care homes and geriatrics wards in 50s style outfits.

Rydyn ni’n falch i gyhoeddi bod Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd ar restr fer yng ngwobrau Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2019.

Yn ogystal â chael ein lleoli ar y rhestr fer ar gyfer y wobr Undeb y Myfyrwyr, rydym yn hynod falch o ein prosiect ‘Gwneud Gwên’ Gwirfoddoli Caerdydd sydd wedi eu cynnwys ar restr fer y categori Rhoi yn ôl.

Yn cyflwyno Gwneud Gwên

Mae’r Prosiect Gwneud Gwên yn credu fod bob plentyn yn haeddu plentyndod ac yn deall fod salwch neu anabledd yn gallu gwneud hynny yn anodd iawn i rai. Eu nod yw helpu’r plant hyn i fwynhau eu plentyndod. Maen nhw’n gwneud ymddangosiad mewn amrediad eang o ddigwyddiadau yn cynnwys ymweld ag ysbytai a digwyddiadau codi arian cymunedol wedi eu gwisgo fel cymeriadau plant poblogaidd. Eu prif flaenoriaeth yw hwyl i blant a’r gwirfoddolwyr; maen nhw’n gobeithio tynnu sylw plant oddi wrth eu problemau, a thrwy gyfrwng hwyl a chwarae, eu galluogi i fwynhau eu hunain fel plant.

Lansiwyd Gwneud Gwên yn 2017 gan Luke Morgan, myfyriwr Prifysgol Caerdydd. O ganlyniad i astudio meddygaeth, gwelodd Luke blant a oedd yn profi caledi oherwydd salwch neu anabledd ac roedd yn awyddus i wneud gwahaniaeth.

Does dim byd gwell na cherdded i mewn i ystafell a gweld wyneb plant yn goleuo wrth weld eu heilun cyn rhedeg ar draws y ‘stafell i’ch cyfarch chi.

Mae Luke yn dal i arwain y prosiect ac yn credu fod manteision o ganlyniad i wirfoddoli yn enfawr. “Does dim byd gwell na cherdded i mewn i ystafell a gweld wyneb plant yn goleuo wrth weld eu heilun cyn rhedeg ar draws y ‘stafell i’ch cyfarch chi. Nid yw’n anghyffredin i arwr, neu dywysoges i gael eu dilyn o amgylch yr ystafell gan griw o blant wedi eu syfrdanu. Fy hoff atgof yw merch fach a oedd yn eilun addoli Tinkerbell, felly pan roeddwn i wedi gwisgo fel Peter Pan, mi dreuliodd hi ddiwrnod cyfan yn rhestru'r holl resymau pam fod Tinkerbell mor anhygoel. Bydd ei hangerdd, cyffro a brwdfrydedd yn aros gyda mi, ac rydw i’n gobeithio y bydd yr ymweliad yn aros ei chof hithau hefyd.

Effaith mawr iawn

Mae’r prosiect Gwneud Gwên nawr yn agosáu at ddathlu dwy flynedd o fodolaeth ac wedi dod a gwen i dros 6,000 o blant dros 2,000 o riau o wirfoddoli. Mae ganddynt dros 200 o wirfoddolwyr angerddol sydd wedi rhoi o’u hamser ochr yn ochr â’u hastudiaethau.

Yn edrych i’r dyfodol, ar hyn o bryd mae’r prosiect yn gweithio ar ehangu i gynnwys ymddangosiadau mewn digwyddiadau ac ymweliadau i bobl hyn. Gan gyflwyno ymweliadau i gartrefi gofal hen bobl a wardiau geriatreg mewn gwisgoedd wedi eu hysbrydoli gan y 50au.
