Following the decision last week to cease the provision of maintenance grants for students from England, we can now provide some additional clarity on the impact it may have on current and new students.  Below are some frequently asked questions that we hope will explain how you may be affected.

I am a full time English domiciled student (ie, my home address is in England) and:

I'm a current Cardiff University student and next year will be heading into my second/third/fourth/fifth year

English students who have commenced a course of study at University prior to August 2016, will continue to be eligible to apply for maintenance grants as well as maintenance and tuition fee loans.  More information can be found at gov.uk/student-finance/continuing-fulltime-students

I am a new full time student who is planning on coming to Cardiff in 2016

English students starting a new course in or after August 2016 will not be eligible to apply for maintenance grants.  Tuition fee loans and maintenance loans providing assistance with living expenses will be available.  Maintenance loans for students studying in Cardiff will be available up to £8,200 per year. More information can be found at gov.uk/student-finance/new-fulltime-students

I am a Welsh domiciled student (ie, my home address is in Wales) at Cardiff University

The Welsh Government has not yet confirmed financial support arrangements for Welsh students for August 2016 onwards.  With Welsh Government elections taking place in May 2016, it is impossible to predict what financial support is going to be available to students. The decision made recently to cease provision of Maintenance grants to English students does not affect Welsh students studying in Cardiff or at other institutions in the UK.More information for Welsh students can be found at studentfinancewales.co.uk/.

If you remain unsure of the funding arrangements with regards to maintenance grants, please contact Cardiff University Student Support.  Details of how they can be contacted can be found at cardiff.ac.uk/studentsupport/

We have not yet been able to obtain clarification regarding maintenance grants and any changes that may affect students on interruption of study, who have deferred or are seeking a transfer.  As soon as we can confirm any potential impact to students in these situations we will do so.  Similarly as the financial support for Welsh students becomes clearer, we will provide further information.
