Dear | Annwyl Professor Colin Riordan, Vice Chancellor of Cardiff University,

I am writing to you in relation to the upcoming potential strike action proposed by UCU. As you know this action is planned for up to fourteen days across a month period, which will of course have strong repercussions on the student experience.

Given the enormity of the proposed strike action, we would like to know what the University is doing to try and resolve the matter. We are encouraging UCU to consider the impact on students, and we ask that in responding to the proposed strike action, you do the same. We recognise that this is a national issue but we would strongly urge the University to apply pressure to UUK to keep the negotiations going. In our opinion the University should be fighting to find an equitable solution for staff and students, and this needs to happen now so that strike action can be avoided.

As the strike action is foreseen, we believe that it is the University’s obligation to pursue mitigating actions to limit the potential impact. We have had numerous students contacting us about the strikes; therefore, we would like to know:

  • Whether the University will give extensions for coursework deadlines which fall within, or just after the proposed strike period?
  • Whether the University will ensure that all missed content is excluded from examinations?
  • With the strike action being proposed for up to 14 days, will the University provide refunds for any student who has missed a substantial amount of contact hours?
  • Will all lectures be rescheduled or recorded? And will handouts be provided in the interim to allow students to undertake self-study?
  • Will PGR students who are members of UCU be able to strike without fear of disciplinary action?

To provide clarity, I urge the University to appoint an individual to take responsibility for mitigating the impacts of the proposed strikes and for providing information to the students affected.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Kind regards/ Cofion Cynnes

Annwyl yr Athro Colin Riordan, Is-ganghellor Prifysgol Caerdydd,

Ysgrifennaf atoch ynghylch y streic posib sydd ar ddod y mae UCU yn ei gynnig. Fel y gwyddoch, bwriedir gweithredu am hyd at bedwar diwrnod ar ddeg dros gyfnod o fis, a fydd wrth gwrs yn cael effaith sylweddol ar brofiad myfyrwyr.

O ystyried graddfa enfawr y streic arfaethedig, hoffem wybod yr hyn mae'r Brifysgol yn ei wneud i geisio datrys y mater. Rydym yn annog Undeb Prifysgolion a Cholegau (UCU) i ystyried yr effaith ar fyfyrwyr ac, wrth ymateb i'r gweithredu diwydiannol arfaethedig, gofynnwn i chi wneud yr un peth. Rydym yn cydnabod bod hwn yn fater cenedlaethol ond byddem yn annog y Brifysgol yn gryf i bwyso ar UUK i barhau â'r trafodaethau. Yn ein barn ni, dylai'r Brifysgol frwydro i ddod o hyd i ateb teg ar gyfer staff a myfyrwyr, ac mae angen i hyn ddigwydd nawr er mwyn osgoi gweithredu diwydiannol.

Gan fod y streic i'w ragweld, credwn y dylai'r Brifysgol ddilyn camau lliniaru er mwyn cyfyngu ar yr effaith bosibl. Mae nifer o fyfyrwyr wedi cysylltu â ni ynghylch y streiciau; felly, hoffem wybod:

•             A fydd y Brifysgol yn estyn terfynau amser gwaith cwrs sydd o fewn, neu yn union ar ôl, cyfnod y streic arfaethedig?

•             A fydd y Brifysgol yn sicrhau bod yr holl gynnwys a gollir wedi'i hepgor o unrhyw arholiadau?

•             Bydd y gweithredu diwydiannol arfaethedig yn para am hyd at 14 diwrnod, felly a fydd y Brifysgol yn rhoi ad-daliad i unrhyw fyfyriwr sydd wedi colli nifer sylweddol o oriau cyswllt?

•             A fydd pob darlith yn cael ei hail-drefnu neu ei chofnodi? A ddarperir taflenni yn y cyfamser er mwyn i fyfyrwyr astudio ar eu pen eu hunain?

•             A fydd modd i fyfyrwyr ôl-raddedig ymchwil sy'n aelodau o UCU fynd ar streic heb orfod wynebu camau disgyblu?

Er eglurder, anogaf y Brifysgol i benodi unigolyn i gymryd cyfrifoldeb dros liniaru effeithiau'r streiciau arfaethedig a thros ddarparu gwybodaeth i'r myfyrwyr y mae hyn yn effeithio arnynt.

Edrychwn ymlaen at glywed gennych,

Cofion cynnes

Hollie Cooke, Llywydd Undeb Myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd
