This week Cardiff Students’ Union is hosting the annual National Union of Students (NUS) Wales Conference. The conference is a great opportunity for students, elected officers and campaigners across Welsh institutions to come together to discuss policy proposals and shape the priorities of NUS Wales over the next two years. Delegates from Bangor to Bridgend are in attendance, covering both Universities and Colleges across Wales. Some key topics being discussed include student housing, the NUS Decolonise Education campaign and more.

The conference also includes the election results for NUS Wales and the NUS Student Wales Awards.

We are proud to announce that Cardiff Students’ Union current Vice President Postgraduate, Orla Tarn, who previously served as Vice President Societies and Volunteering in 2019-20, was elected by students as the next President of NUS Wales. Orla will take up this role in July for a period of two years. The representation of Welsh students at a national level is a fantastic achievement, Orla is one of only a handful of Cardiff University representatives to hold national office in recent years. Prior to Orla, the last Cardiff representative to be Elected to NUS Wales was Beth Button, who served as Vice President Education at Cardiff Students' Union between 2012-2013. Beth was elected Deputy President of NUS Wales in 2013 and 2014, before serving as NUS Wales President from 2014 to 2016.

Speaking on their election, NUS Wales President-elect Orla Tarn said:

I am delighted to have been elected as NUS Wales President 2022-24. I’ve learnt so much through being involved at Cardiff Students’ Union over the past years and I hope to draw on this to now represent the 300,000 students and learners in Wales. The next two years will be challenging but hold a lot of hope for students across Wales. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of it.

At the conference, candidates were also announced for the NUS Wales Steering Committee. You can read more about the candidates on the NUS Wales website.
