It’s a new year and we’ve thought of six new things for you to try out as New Year Resolutions. We know some things last longer than others, but we think anything that can make you feel better about yourself or making the world a little better for someone else is always a good thing. Here are a few of our suggestions.

1. Try something different

Join a sports club or society, or try something new with Give it A Go. You're able to join a club or society at any point during the year.

2. Go on an adventure

University is one of the best times for adventures with your friends, and what a better way to create some great memories than a race around the world for charity?

Jailbreak is a charity race where you get as far away from Cardiff with your team of 3-4 people, and then back again in just 52 hours. The catch? You are not allowed to spend any money on travel. You’ll have to beg, borrow (we don’t advise stealing) and charm your way onto flights, ferries and coaches, and get back in our allocated time. We do this every year to raise funds to support local community projects with our charity, Cardiff Volunteering. Early bird tickets are on sale now for £10!

3. Do something for someone else

Volunteering is a great way to make a difference in your new local community. You’ll also get to meet loads of new people and have a lot of fun! Cardiff Volunteering offers a wide variety of different and exciting projects to choose from which you can fit around your University schedule. Play with puppies, start an after school art group, and look out for teenagers with learning disabilities or befriend adults with Autism and Asperger’s.

Lots of students volunteer on projects in and around the city of Cardiff, giving up their time to help improve the social, economic and environmental lives of others in the local community and gaining new skills, experiences and friends along the way – so it really is a no-brainer!

4. Get your dream job

We hold elections every year in February to elect a team of seven full time officers who lead the Students’ Union for an academic year.  The students who are elected are paid, and also become directors and trustees of the Students’ Union. You get the chance to lead the Students’ Union and make decisions on how it is run, which is great experience for any jobs you have in the future. If you think you could do a brilliant job leading the Students’ Union. Nominations will close at midday (12:00) on Thursday 4th February 2016.

5. Look after yourself

We’re here to look out for you if things aren’t going according to plan. We’ve actually got a whole department in the Students’ Union called Student Advice, where our qualified advice team can help you on a whole range of issues. Whether you’re having a bad time on your course, have had a bad experience with a landlord or even just need someone to talk to we are here to help.

Plus, the Students’ Union is proud to work with a whole load of Student Led Services to help you out with your mental health, sexual health and of course physical health. Plus, Nightline are always on hand when you need someone to talk to.

6. Learn Welsh

Welsh is for everyone, and going to university in the capital city of Wales is a great opportunity for you to learn it. The Welsh for All language scheme provided by the School of Welsh gives you a chance to learn the Welsh Language for free.  If you’re planning on staying in Wales after University, speaking in Welsh is a great skill to have.

We’d love to wish you a very happy New Year! All the best for 2016!
