We are pleased to report that Cardiff University has announced that it will stop investing in fossil fuels by 2021. The decision comes following a meeting of Cardiff University’s Council today (Tuesday 20th March 2018) in which the University’s draft ethical investment policy was discussed.

In 2015, a motion passed at the Cardiff University Students’ Union Annual General Meeting (AGM) resolving that the Elected Officers should “directly and immediately lobby the University and its appropriate senior staff to ensure its commitment to ethical divestment as a matter of high priority, fully utilising their access to committees within the University”.

We are grateful to everyone who has participated in driving this change and making it happen.

After lobbying for change, in 2017 the Elected Officers and People and Planet were invited to discuss how to take the issue of divestment forward with the Chief Operating Officer of Cardiff University. This meeting resulted in the Officers being invited to present the issue at University Council (the governing body of the University). University Council were receptive to the issues raised in the presentation which was a collaboration between the Officers and People and Planet Society. The result of the wide discussions was an agreement to stop investments in fossil fuels by 2021.

We are proud that through this partnership work with People and Planet Society and Senior University Staff, we were able to secure this commitment. Today’s announcement of divestment over the next three years is the culmination of a number of years of partnership work and shows the impact that this can have on issues students care about.

We are grateful to everyone who has participated in driving this change and making it happen.
