The topic of high cost agency fees has always been close to our hearts. In 2006, we launched our own letting agency with the main purpose of finding students quality homes owned by reputable landlords. Cardiff Student Letting was one of the first Students’ Union owned letting agents in the UK and since they were established 13 years ago, they have never charged a single student tenant agency fees.
Owned and run by Cardiff University Students’ Union
Cardiff Student Letting was established to support students in finding their home after we found that year upon year our Student Advice team were receiving a high number of complaints from students about independent letting agencies. Many students found that independent letting agencies were charging staggering fees and often the houses were in poor condition. Every year, Cardiff Student Letting provides thousands of students with new homes that are suitable for their needs, whether that is shared accommodation with friends, letting a single room or even housing a student with a family. Their dedicated team have always worked tirelessly to ensure our students are housed in their perfect home at the heart of the student community. Annually, they save students who sign up around £145,000 a year! This year they are going even further and hope to save students even more money by encouraging their landlords to only charge a deposit of £150 per person.
We have always been proud at the Students’ Union that our own letting agency has never charged agency fees.
For Cardiff students, not for profit
Jackie Yip, our President commented on the future of Cardiff Student Letting, she said
“We have always been proud at the Students’ Union that our own letting agency has never charged agency fees. We recognise that student living is tricky enough without all these unnecessary costs! We will continue to ensure that our students have a positive and simple experience when letting houses so that they can focus on their time at university and making enjoyable memories.”
On a wider scale, we were delighted that letting agents are no longer charging tenants agency fees from 1st September 2019. Earlier this year it was announced by the Welsh Government that tenants would be protected from charges for viewings, signing a contract or renewing a tenancy. They would no longer be charged agency fees which could save tenants almost £200 a year. Cardiff University students, led by Cardiff University Students’ Union President Fadhila A. Al Dhahouri played an important role in securing this legislative change for all tenants in Wales after putting forward powerful testimonies explaining the financial and emotional cost of having to pay these unfair and un-justified charges.
At Cardiff University Students’ Union, we see this as a major step in the right direction and are proud to have always been a market leader in this area. However, we also recognise that there is still more to do to support students in the rented housing sector and will continue to campaign on further housing issues to improve the experience of our students. Remember if you are experiencing any issues related to housing, our experienced Student Advice team are always around to help you.
